Breaking News Reporting Intern
Spring 2023 (1), summer 2023 (1), and fall 2023 (2)
The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for reporters to join our Breaking News Engagement team. These paid, 12-week interns will receive training and mentoring, but they will also hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories from the office and in the field. Breaking news is the main focus, but there will be opportunities to pursue projects aimed at engaging our audience and to work closely with our data journalism, development and audience teams. The ideal candidate will hustle and be quick to a story. We are looking for reporters who enjoy jumping on any and every story that arises, whether it's covering weather, criminal justice or public health.
All college students are encouraged to apply, with preference given to students who are enrolled or have recently completed a degree at a Bay Area four-year or community college. There are two internships in the fall, two in the summer and one in the spring.
Requirements:
These positions are full-time, based in San Francisco, and the typical workweek likely will be Monday through Friday. Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required as news warrants. The summer internships typically begin in June and last through August, but there is some flexibility to accommodate college schedules. We will work with spring and fall interns to determine the best schedule. Applications for spring and summer 2023 are due by Oct. 14, 2022. We will also consider applications now for fall 2023, but we anticipate deferring decisions on those positions until the new year.
Duties:
• Receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.
• Report and write breaking news articles on tight deadlines
• Contribute to reader engagement projects
What we're looking for:
• Overall: Someone eager to find and chase good stories, with an eye for the details, such as headlines, story angles and quotes, that will capture readers' attention. Strong writing skills are important, as is a strict dedication to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness.
• Newsroom experience: Strong college publication experience or previous internships preferred, but not required.
Vaccination Requirement: As part of its continued efforts to maintain a safe workplace for employees, Hearst Newspapers requires that all employees who receive a written offer of employment be fully vaccinated (as defined by the CDC) against the coronavirus by the first day of employment as a condition of employment, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Hearst Newspapers will consider requests for reasonable accommodation on an individual basis in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
Please include in your application a portfolio of your work or links to your designs, along with brief explanations of your role in the execution of the pieces. Your role could include brainstorming, researching, art directing collaborators, project coordination, and design and coding. Applications are due by Oct. 14, 2022.
