San Antonio Express-News
Education Reporter
The San Antonio Express-News is looking for a reporter with a searching spirit, a passion for reporting and a flair for storytelling to write about innovation in K-12 schools in one of the nation's fastest growing metro areas.
The successful candidate will be a fearless, enterprising reporter who loves to get inside classrooms, talk to students, parents and teachers, decipher budgets and use data to tell stories.
If selected for the position, you will join an established education team that covers K-12 and higher ed in the San Antonio region. Your role within that team will be to focus on efforts to experiment and innovate in the classroom. You'll report on new teaching methods, new technologies, unique school-community partnerships and the like. You'll look for stories about programs and people who are trying to get beyond the tried-and-true to find new ways to close learning gaps, motivate students and enhance teachers' effectiveness.
Although this is not an investigative reporting position per se, the successful candidate -- like all San Antonio Express-News beat reporters -- will be encouraged to look for and execute accountability stories.
Above all, it's your job, and every reporter's greatest challenge, to be interesting – to make education legible, meaningful and compelling to the people whose taxes support it and whose children depend on it.
Prerequisites
• College degree
• Three to five years of experience as a reporter
• Fluency in the basics of digital journalism, including SEO, headline writing, audience metrics, social listening and social promotion
• Spanish-language fluency is a plus but is not required
• Data skills are a plus
