Director, Production and Pagination Operations

King Features/RBMA is seeking a detail oriented, computer savvy and energetic person to join our print production and pagination team. This position requires working at a fast pace in a team environment for the RBMA production department which services a wide array of newspaper clients nationwide.
The ideal candidate will work with a team to complete daily workflow of newspaper comic layouts, special section publications and puzzle content for print and digital distribution. This position will communicate and work closely with sales and support teams to meet client deadlines. This position will support the sales team with ad production and layout/pagination of our daily newspapers and our special section publications.
Design skills a must; writing skills preferred. Excellent computer skills, including MS Office, are required, Adobe Design Suite, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop experience preferred. Organizational skills and attention to detail are critical.
Job Summary
Production layout and proofing of electronic pagination for print newspaper and online production. Our ideal candidate will have experience in newspaper design, understand the fast-paced, daily print production environment, and have the ability to multitask. Candidates also must display a strong instinct for problem solving, a sense of urgency, and a passion for content creation. Experience with InDesign, Photoshop and other related design/ad layout systems is a must.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
• Oversee a team of production/pagination specialists who accommodate client needs on a tight timetable.
• Manages workflow including maintaining task and project lists, assessing team workload to determine task assignments, coordinating project deadlines and budgets, and organizing relevant department resources to keep projects on schedule
• Edits and updates existing text, design and web documents as part of the proofing process
• Coordinates print fulfillment, electronic conversions and archiving of projects
• Works closely with colleagues to help drive and support processes and programs that impact the team's ability to effectively produce work
• Analyze workflow and resource allocation for optimal efficiencies in coordination with other team managers
• Applying content from various computer software systems to produce digital ready files for client publications.
• Follow design guidelines to produce layouts using desktop publishing software
• Ability to edit graphics and photos. This includes cropping, color correction, sizing, changing color depth, and collecting graphics and art for use in layout
• Trouble shooting issues with pages that fail to output correctly
• Proofing of text and graphics
• Converting files for use online
• Uploading files to the Internet
• Design newspaper layouts
• Design special publications
• Oversee/Supervise precise proofreading work of team members
• Manage Graphic Artists, colorizers to generate published product(s).
• Manage interns and contractors, as needed.
• Review produced materials for accuracy and completeness.
• Maintain, update, and implement proprietary guidelines.
• Collaborate with other departments to develop new or enhancements to existing tools, features, etc.
Required Skills:
• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Design/Communication Arts or related field
• Previous supervisory experience, including the demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others to achieve a common goal.
• 2 years experience in pagination or related field
• Journalism experience a plus
• Proficiency in Adobe InDesign a must
• Experience in Illustrator and Photoshop a plus
• Experience with BLOX CMS a plus
