The Houston Chronicle seeks a Deputy Metro Editor who can work closely with the Metro Editor on running the department, lead a team of reporters and drive digital transformation in the department. We are looking for a forward-thinking journalism leader with a demonstrated ability to produce a smart mix of news and enterprise that serves readers when, where and how they want it.
This editor's team of reporters will be expected to juggle breaking and trending news, longer-term enterprise and investigative work that helps readers understand the fourth largest city in America. We want someone who is dynamic, aggressive and collaborative, someone who has the confidence to challenge conventional thinking and the urgency to think digital first. This editor must possess a command of digital best practices and a respect for audience data and the insights it provides about the relevance and impact of our coverage.
This person will also work with the Metro Editor and other editors on planning coverage, making day-to-day decisions, attending daily meetings, subbing for the Metro editor, coordinating coverage with the other editors on the Metro desk, and partnering with the digital team to ensure breaking news is posted with the urgency required to set the pace in a highly competitive online media market.
This editor will help ensure our journalism reflects the diversity of the communities we cover and the essence of what makes our city special, infuriating and fun. We want an editor who can make every story better, someone who can enliven and sharpen the writing, deepen the reporting, and optimize the content. This editor will help reporters think beyond the routine and procedural. We want stories that break ground and introduce our readers to interesting people they didn't know or places they didn't know existed.
5 years experience. Supervisory experience also required. College degree preferrred.
