Hearst Newspapers has an immediate opening for an ambitious, versatile journalist with web development skills and a passion for data-driven reporting to join a digital team serving the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. The data visualization developer will be a creative programmer who pushes the boundaries of online news and analysis and builds experiences that engage our readers.
We are looking for a dynamic digital journalist to work from conception to execution on quick-turn and longer-term projects, creating data visualizations and graphics for HoustonChronicle.com and ExpressNews.com. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with high standards who has excellent communication skills and is comfortable providing and taking feedback. This position is part of a new data-focused team that will both originate its own projects and collaborate with coverage teams across the newsrooms.
What the data developer will do:
• Report and build static and interactive graphics for quick-turn stories and larger projects.
• Design and build digital- and mobile-first presentations for news stories and analyses.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors, designers, photographers and producers in two newsrooms on interactive stories.
• Support major data projects for the HoustonChronicle.com and ExpressNews.com teams.
What it will take to be successful:
• Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment is required.
• Experience building web experiences for desktop, tablet and mobile is required.
• Comfort with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and relevant code libraries.
• Working knowledge of Git and Github.
• Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
• Appreciation of Slack, Zoom and other remote-friendly tools.
• Plus: Experience working with APIs.
• Plus: Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or other visual design tools.
• Plus: Knowledge of backend languages/environments such as Python, Node or PHP.
• Plus: Knowledge of frontend frameworks like React, Angular or Vue.
• Plus: Cartography/mapping experience.
• Plus: Reporting experience.
Requirements:
• This position is full-time.
• Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required.
• While the role accommodates some remote work, especially during the pandemic, the position will be based in our Houston or Austin newsroom. Out-of-state candidates should be prepared to move to Texas when circumstances permit.
