Breaking News & Enterprise Editor
The Houston Chronicle is seeking a multifaceted, dynamic editor to lead a new newsroom team that will be first and best in covering breaking stories in Greater Houston, writing continuing coverage of stories that merit such treatment, and identifying news trends that drive readership and, ultimately, subscriber growth, both digitally and in print.
This editor will work closely with the editor of an enhanced Chronicle Public Safety Reporting Team on large-scale crime and disaster stories, as well as stories coming out of state and federal court. She/he also will work collaboratively with editors in other departments, sometimes pairing reporters on the breaking news and enterprise team with beat reporters to propel coverage forward quickly.
The ideal candidate will have experience managing a team of 10 to 15 reporters and editors. Familiarity with SEO, social media and other audience best practices are a must, as are journalistic chops to empower and drive our new team to post breaking news quickly, update stories frequently and have the vision to see which stories will continue to resonate with readers. Coverage must reflect the ethnic, cultural and geographic diversity of one of the most vibrant news ecosystems in the United States.
Responsibilities
• Push innovative storytelling and be adept at leading the staff in producing high-impact enterprise stories
• Work collaboratively with editors, other reporters (including beat reporters when applicable), photographers, the digital desk and the ''DevHub'' data visualization team to tell impactful stories across platforms that engage and retain local subscribers and other readers
• Conceptualize and assign stories aimed at growing digital subscriptions by identifying trending or important stories through social media, analytics or otherwise
• Edit and oversee editors who guides staffer through the reporting process and edits their work with excellent command of grammar, usage, and AP style
• Elevate reporters' stories by seizing opportunities for in-depth, enterprise reporting and investigative angles that arise out of breaking news stories.
• Communicate quickly and effectively with reporters to break news online and assign follo- up when appropriate with more in-depth enterprise pieces
• Demonstrate a high comfort level with analyzing and interpreting metrics and uses them to inform coverage decisions in real-time and the long-term
• Develop and mentor reporters, editors and photographers, offering constructive criticism of their work and overseeing evaluations of reporters and editors on the team
Skills
and Experience
• Bachelor's degree
• Demonstrated experience managing newsroom personnel and producing high-quality news and enterprise journalism across digital and print platforms
• Demonstrated success working in a deadline-driven environment
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks
• 10 years of experience as a senior reporter or editor
• Ability to mentor journalists of all skill levels
• Understanding of social media landscape and SEO
• Command of federal and Texas open-records laws
• Command of what constitutes breaking and trending news
