Assistant A&E Editor
The Chronicle's twin goals are to effect change through exceptional, impactful journalism and to build deep loyalty with our audiences, becoming central to their everyday lives. Our arts and entertainment coverage is key to both goals. The department's mission is to present the best arts and entertainment coverage in the Bay Area. Our critics and writers highlight both established and emerging artists and performers, preview what's coming (and suggest what can't be missed) and critically assess the work so that audiences come back again and again - not only for guidance but also for a sense of community.
To that end, The Chronicle's Datebook team is looking for an innovative, detail-oriented assistant editor who has a passion for the arts and an insatiable sense of discovery. This editor should be familiar with Datebook and its award-winning writers.
The assistant editor supports the arts and entertainment team, responsible for bringing stories from concept to publication for online (datebook.sfchronicle.com) and Datebook's daily print sections, as conceived with the senior A&E editor and co-assistant A&E editor. This is a management position.
The ideal candidate has strong journalistic credentials and doesn't hesitate to jump in to assist with reporting and writing or social media management as needed, but finds reward in elevating other writers as an editor.
This editor should be comfortable working with newsroom colleagues - from Datebook columnists to critics and others - but also with collaborators in audience data, business development and more.
This position may require working on the weekends and evenings.
Responsibilities
• Assign and edit stories, from breaking entertainment news to long-form enterprise projects as well as guide-based or things-to-do utility stories.
• Help staff members and contributors creatively shape story ideas, visuals and packaging for online and print presentations.
• Write compelling headlines for a digital, diverse audience.
• Help recruit a diverse range of freelance writers to expand Datebook's coverage of the Bay Area arts community.
• Works with the senior editor and co-assistant editor to optimize the digital impact of the Datebook brand.
• Find and foster an online audience for Datebook stories beyond the core Chronicle arts fans.
Requirements
• A minimum of five years of editing or management experience at a digital-first publication.
• Experience reporting, writing and editing arts and entertainment content.
• High level of professionalism at all times, including a demonstrated commitment to accuracy, fairness and integrity.
• Excellent communicator with a proven track record of collaboration.
• A nuanced understanding of audience data and analytics to make informed decisions on coverage.
