Full Time Job
Senior News Editor, Cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan is looking for a strategy-minded news editor to manage a team of writers across both print and digital media. This person will oversee every step of the brand's news output: approving pitches for both the magazine and website, assigning and editing stories, conferring with Hearst's legal team, preparing for live events, and directing how the brand covers breaking news in real time.
An eye for analytics and a savviness about the performance of news content online is required, and a passion for celebrity and viral news is key.
This full-time position is based in Cosmopolitan's office in New York City and reports to the brand's deputy editor.
Responsibilities:
• Manage the daily and monthly output of a team of three writers and regular freelance contributors, from approving pitches to suggesting angles and editing stories
• Monitor traffic analytics closely and adjust strategy accordingly
• Develop fresh and thoughtful approaches for how Cosmo covers news in print and online
• Concept second-day response stories for digital and longer-lead response stories for print
• Design proactive and ambitious coverage plans for live events, like royal weddings and awards shows, while working closely with a SEO manager to make sure all coverage is optimized for Google News
• Coach junior writers to become better reporters and skilled editors
• Collaborate across teams (including other Cosmo verticals, as well as our SEO and ignition teams) on strategy and tentpole events
Requirements:
• Minimum of six years of experience across print and digital media
• At least three years of experience on a news team
• An impeccable sense of news judgment and an obsessive appetite for all kinds of news stories, from delightfully WTF celeb drama to serious political updates
• Experience overseeing daily and breaking news events, plus conceptualizing longer-lead editorial packages
• A voice and perspective that will sharpen Cosmo's news coverage to become even smarter, funnier, and more informative than it already is
• A network of industry contacts, including relationships with exceptional writers/contributors
• The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, breaking news environment and juggle many priorities at once
Note: For consideration, resumes must be submitted in .pdf format with a cover letter, salary requirements, and a link to a portfolio of work
