The Senior Manager, Newsletter Operations & Engagement will work across the full Hearst Magazines newsletter portfolio, supporting both editorial and business goals. This role will serve as a key connector between our Ad Sales team and other internal partners to ensure smooth collaboration throughout the ad sales and trafficking process-with a focus on driving revenue. In partnership with the Director of Newsletters & Audience and the Newsletter Managers, they will also lead strategic efforts around audience onboarding, retention, engagement, and winback for both free and paid newsletters. This role is essential to helping grow our newsletter business and will collaborate closely with teams across Consumer Revenue, including Books, Brand Licensing, and Growth Marketing.

The Senior Manager, Newsletter Operations & Engagement plays a central role in advancing the strategy, growth, and performance of the Hearst Magazines newsletter portfolio. This individual will lead cross-functional collaboration with Ad Sales and other internal teams, ensuring clear communication and smooth processes that drive advertising performance and newsletter audience growth.
This role is a hybrid of strategic thinking and operational execution. From shaping audience development strategies to ensuring flawless ad delivery, the Senior Manager will work closely with the Director of Newsletters & Audience, brand Newsletter Managers, and Growth Marketing partners to deliver a best-in-class reader experience and strong business outcomes.
This position will support both free and paid newsletter efforts and requires a collaborative mindset, a strong attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
• Be a central advertising point of contact: Serve as the primary liaison for the Ad Sales team around newsletter advertising, ensuring smooth coordination, clear timelines, and strong performance.
• Deliver data-backed insights: Consolidate and share actionable insights related to newsletter ad products, audience size, and engagement, helping teams make informed decisions.
• Oversee ad operations: Manage the technical setup and execution of newsletter ads in the programmatic ad server, ensuring accurate delivery and reporting.
• Support strategic execution: Collaborate on the development of key strategies and help bring them to life through detailed, hands-on implementation.
• Project manage key initiatives: Organize and track complex projects across teams to ensure timely execution and alignment.
• Drive newsletter growth: Partner with Newsletter Managers and the Growth Marketing team on acquisition, onboarding, engagement, retention, and winback strategies for newsletter subscribers.
• Champion innovation: Stay current with trends in email best practices and ad formats to help evolve our newsletter products.
• Foster strong internal collaboration: Work cross-functionally with stakeholders across Consumer Revenue, editorial, marketing, and legal to align on goals and execute effectively.
• Contribute to reporting and insights: Provide regular updates on audience and revenue growth, surfacing opportunities and areas for improvement.
Qualifications
• 5–7 years of experience in audience development, email marketing, newsletter operations, or related project management.
• Experience in media or publishing environments is a plus.
• Strong track record managing and optimizing email or newsletter campaigns at scale.
• Familiarity with tools like Sailthru, Google Analytics, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Creative thinker with attention to detail and a passion for delivering high-quality work.
• Comfortable with tools like Airtable, Asana, Trello, or other project management platforms.
• A collaborative and solutions-oriented mindset.
Compensation: The base salary for this role is between $88,000 - $100,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
Location: This role is currently based in the NYC office at least 3 days a week. No remote option.
