Car and Driver is looking for a print director who will help to reimagine this
63-year-old brand across all platforms, focusing on print but also including digital, video, podcasts live events, and more.
This is a job for an ambitious person who can manage staff, develop and implement strategy and big-picture ideas, and oversee the features and reviews departments. The print director at Car and Driver should be adept at editing a feature story, writing cover lines, top-editing a front-of-book story, weighing in on photo shoots, and helping promote the brand.
This position reports to the editor in chief and will be based in Car and Driver's new offices near Detroit, M
I.
Responsibilities:
• Work with top editors to develop creative features for the front of the book, features section and special magazine editions. Adapt online features for use in the magazine
• Help conceptualize the cover each month, working with editorial and design staff on cover lines and layout
• Top edit the magazine and shepherd issue through to completion, streamlining the process as necessary
• Pre-screen lineups with top editors and run creative meetings for sections with art team and editors
• Come up with ideas for book and brand expansions
• Work with the digital director and executive editor to maintain a strong Car and Driver voice throughout the brand
• Develop and maintain relationships with the automakers and organize car loans for comparison tests and test drives
Requirements:
• At least 10 years' experience in automotive journalism, with at least 5 years managing a team of writers and editors
• Obsession with car culture, the auto industry, and in the Car and Driver brand
• Experience coaching writers to think clearly about their stories, to focus on the audience, and experiment with different ways of storytelling
• Creative thinker willing to push the envelope and bring fresh, innovative ideas to life
• Open to experimenting with content types and using analytics to inform decisions
• Bachelor's degree
