Hearst Digital Media is launching a brand new site that will expand O, The Oprah Magazine's mission to help women live their best lives. For this new team at OprahMag.com , we're looking for a sharp, creative, and voicey wordsmith with keen news judgment that will bring to life trending news and entertainment stories.
The culture writer will be responsible for everything from explainers on what's happening in current events to a breakdown of the latest Beyonce news, Q&As with celebrities, and an opinionated take on the last episode of This Is Us (as well as news about Oprah herself, of course!). This person should also have a strong writing voice and perspective, in addition to proven experience pitching unique ideas and writing creative content that will drive traffic.
Our site is brand new, so we're looking for a hard worker that's as passionate about the Oprah brand as they are about the potential to work on a fast-paced, diverse, creative team in this exciting venture. This position will report to the deputy editor of OprahMag.com.
Responsibilities:
• Write 3-5 stories per day including trending news, pop-culture roundups, cultural critiques, and opinion pieces
• Keep up with the latest trending and pop-culture news, then pitch how we can cover them in a way that makes sense for OprahMag.com
• Take assignments from the top editors and turn them around quickly, with a unique voice and perspective
• Write opinion pieces, personal essays, and cultural critiques that aren't afraid to push boundaries
• Pitch several fresh, longer-form feature ideas monthly
• Work with the social media team to brainstorm engaging ways to share content across platforms
• Collaborate with the photo, video, and design teams to develop dynamic photos, graphics, and multimedia elements to elevate your stories
• Understand the Oprah Magazine voice and mission and how to translate that to the digital world
Requirements:
• At least two years as a writer for a major online publication
• Experience turning around stories in a fast-paced digital environment
• A strong sense of what makes a good story
• A witty, bold, and sharp writing voice
• Experience conceptualizing video ideas to support editorial stories
• Proven experience brainstorming innovative ideas that push the envelope
• Deep familiarity with SEO and how to write stories and headlines that are SEO-friendly
• Experience building stories in a CMS
• Familiarity with analytics tools like Google Analytics
