Assistant News Editor, Cosmopolitan
Your impact:
Cosmopolitan is looking for a sharp assistant news editor to join its hilarious, super-fast, pop culture–obsessed news team. Our team primarily focuses on celebrity and pop culture coverage, but if it's timely and matters to millennials and Gen Z, then we're writing about it. You will use your experience to write daily news stories and explainers, swarm breaking news in real time, prep coverage for live events, and assist senior staff members as needed, with opportunities to contribute to print. The ideal candidate is a digital whiz who is able to ID and write stories quickly in Cosmo's conversational, authoritative, and clever voice. (Read: You're, like, really funny.) This position reports to our news and pop culture director. Please note: For consideration, resumes must be submitted in PDF format with a cover letter, salary requirements, and a link to a portfolio of work.
What you'll do:
• Write several stories a day, as directed by the news and pop culture director. Some days you'll be writing 4 to 5 celeb news stories; other days, you'll be swarming every SEO angle of the latest Netflix show our audience loves
• Cover Cosmo TV show staples like The Bachelor and The Masked Singer, staying glued to the drama that happens both on and offscreen. Expect to be the first of your friends to have inside intel on the best pop culture gossip. (Your group chat thanks you already)
• Prepare pre-written story shells ahead of major events
• Cover live events like the Oscars and Grammys
• Pitch and write for Cosmo print sections, if interested
Who you are:
• You are a witty writer with a year of professional, post-grad experience posting sharp, funny news stories for a digital consumer brand
• You have a perspective that will sharpen Cosmo's news coverage and help it become even funnier, smarter, and more informative than it already is
• You are able to write in Cosmo's voice quickly and consistently
• You have a basic understanding of Google Analytics and Google Trends and can pitch SEO stories with high traffic payoff
• You thrive in fast-paced, daily breaking news environments and are adept at juggling multiple stories
