SCENIC ARTIST - Gulfshore Playhouse
Status: Full-time, year-round position
Start Date: ASAP 2026
The Scenic Artist works in fellowship with another Scenic Artist to assist the Scenic Art Supervisor in achieving production goals throughout the season by executing and completing all finishes and paint treatments per designer elevations and Supervisor specifications. Additionally, the Scenic Artist will prepare both load-in and touch-up kits for each production in collaboration with the Scenic Art Supervisor. The Scenic Artist will also assist in the maintenance of the paint shop inventory, the flammables inventory and the MSDS inventory of all chemicals housed in the production shops. The Scenic Artist also may be asked to assist in other departments when their schedule permits, and they possess the requisite knowledge to assist said department.
The ideal individual will have a drive to provide high-quality work, the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, efficient written and verbal communication, proficient organizational skills, and the ability to work as part of the team. Some weekend and evening hours are required including attendance at performances, special events, and/or meetings that may happen outside normal scheduled hours.
Skills:
- Proficiency in paints and scenic treatments. An excellent grasp on general painting techniques, such as; glazing, trompe l'œil, wood graining, texture application & foam carving.
- The ability to work on a dynamic team with grace and flexibility.
- The capability to work with other staff members, interns, volunteers & guest artists to generate theatrical productions to the standards of Gulfshore Playhouse.
- Ability to read drafting packages, specifically paint elevations
- Proficiency in Google Suite
- Creative problem-solving
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
- Ability to manage time and productivity effectively
- Ability to multitask and achieve tight deadlines
Duties:
- Assist Scenic Art Supervisor with achieving production goals throughout the season by executing and completing all finishes and paint treatments per designer elevations and Supervisor specifications
- Complete all scenic units in line with the build and paint schedule supplied by the Scenic Art Supervisor.
- Maintaining a safe, healthy and clean work environment.
- Lead non-artists such as volunteers or overhire staff in the execution of paint treatments on a per show basis.
- Preparing the load-in kits and touch-up kits for each production.
- Responding to notes as needed to maintain the production during its run.
- Assisting the Scenic Art Supervisor in the creation of treatment samples and treatment paperwork on a per show basis.
- Maintaining the Production Offices paints and flammables inventories as well as being sure the MSDS database is up to date after each show.
- Adhere to all safety protocols at all times.
- Attend all necessary meetings including, but not limited to, production meetings and company meetings.
- Assist the production team with load-in, and strike of scenic elements when needed.
- Provide support for special events.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's Degree in theatrical production or design, or work experience as a Scenic Artist, Muralist or other large scale painter & fabricator.
- 3 years experience in the field (including classroom experience)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment repeatedly or for extended periods.
- Ability to climb, ladders, mobile lifts, catwalks and work at heights
- Ability to work overhead with heavy equipment
- Ability to work in tight, enclosed spaces including ones in the air
- Ability to work in dark spaces
- Ability to stand for long periods of time depending on assignment
- Ability to work in and with proper personal protective equipment
- Ability to safely operate shop equipment and tools
