What You'll Do
This is a high-impact, central newsroom role requiring sharp editorial judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to lead breaking news coverage in real time.
• Lead Newsgathering Efforts: Generate story ideas and aggressively respond to breaking news for broadcast and digital platforms.
• Assignment Coordination: Organize daily coverage by assigning crews, tracking story development, and managing logistics for field teams.
• Real-Time News Monitoring: Monitor scanners, wires, social media, and community sources to identify and act on breaking news opportunities.
• Source Development: Build and maintain strong relationships with law enforcement, government agencies, and community partners to generate exclusive content.
• Content Communication: Clearly and efficiently communicate critical information to reporters, producers, and newsroom leadership.
• Multiplatform Support: Ensure content is gathered and shared for use across all platforms, including broadcast, digital, and social media.
• Collaborate for Impact: Work closely with reporters, anchors, photographers, producers, and managers to ensure accurate, timely, and compelling news coverage.
• Operational Excellence: Handle high-volume phone calls, emails, and incoming information while prioritizing urgent newsroom needs.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a highly organized, solutions-driven journalist who excels under pressure and is passionate about leading breaking news coverage.
• Experience & Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience as an Assignment Editor in a medium to large television market.
• News Judgment: Strong ethical instincts and understanding of ethical and legal standards in journalism.
• Technical Acumen: Experience with newsroom systems such as iNews and proficiency in digital and social media newsgathering tools.
• Organizational Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across teams and with external partners.
• Pressure-Tested: Proven ability to think critically, solve problems quickly, and remain calm under pressure.
• Professionalism: Positive, collaborative attitude and a commitment to contributing to a strong newsroom culture.
Additional Details
FOX 5 / FOX 5 Plus operates 24/7. Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and breaking news situations. Candidates will be required to join the SAG-AFTRA Washington-Mid Atlantic Local union for the off-air news unit.
