The Role:
The VP, Video will own the end-to-end video strategy for Topic.com. They will be responsible for the development, creation, and delivery across multiple formats of great storytelling (non-scripted and scripted) in episodic, serialized, franchised, short video, and film formats.
As a stakeholder of the consumer-facing Topic.com brand, the VP, Video will build a comprehensive premium video content plan, from budget to execution, that results in increased engagement, traffic, and, potentially, revenue from advertisers and/or consumers. They will create an efficient and nimble team that is creatively ambitious and can react to user data and evolutions in brand, social platforms, and business models.
The VP, Video will represent and promote the Topic.com brand to agencies, talent, production companies, producers, and other important leaders in the digital content space. They will bring significant energy, curiosity, creativity and focus to the role, which offers a unique and powerful opportunity to revolutionize, define and shape the premium shortform programming and distribution space.
The VP, Video will be an integral member of the Topic.com team and will report to the SVP, Editorial, at Topic.com. The VP, Video will have two direct reports.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Work with Topic.com's SVP, Editorial and General Manager to develop and execute video programming strategy for Topic.com.
• Develop and manage the overall Topic.com video content budget.
• Develop and produce original video content, including social video, short series, documentaries, scripted content, short films and other types of premium video work, including recurring and ongoing franchises built for platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.
• Recruit and manage video teams and/or production companies that produce Topic videos.
• Manage entire process, from pitch to delivery; ensure that productions are on schedule and within budget.
• Identify and work with the editorial and acquisitions teams to acquire licensed content for Topic.
• Identify and cultivate new and existing talent for Topic from diverse communities, platforms and outlets, including emerging creators publishing on digitally-native platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vimeo.
• Keep up to date on trends, strategies and the overall landscape of other video creation and distribution brands, whether boutique (i.e. BlackPills) or broad (YouTube, Hulu).
• Ideate around video content built to accompany editorial efforts in other formats (longform journalism, photography, illustration).
• Facilitate development of projects beyond their initial digital forms for potential sales or license to third parties across different formats (podcasts/film/TV/etc)
Secondary Responsibilities:
• Content Performance: Work with analytics and social teams to track content performance; interpret and react to data through regular updates and meetings.
• Sales/Advertising: work with internal sales and marketing teams to develop and execute content and/or integrations that work for potential brand partners and advertisers.
Background & Qualifications:
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience, primarily focused on fiction programming. Non-fiction programming is a plus.
• Specific digital native, short-form production and development experience in both scripted and non-scripted areas.
• Proven track record of partnering with production operations, i.e. unions, budgets, etc.
• Working relationships with production communities in NY, LA and beyond.
• 5+ years experience working with talent throughout the creative process, end to end.
• Existing relationships with talent
• Ideal candidate has experience creating topical documentary/news & informational content.
• Working knowledge of digital media landscape, including social media platforms, TV/OTT, and overarching trends in video consumption.
• Willingness to travel to Los Angeles and other locations as needed.
