First Look Media is looking for a junior accountant to contribute to all aspects of the finance function in this dynamic, multi-media environment. The company operates a for-profit company and a non-profit company, with each entity housing multiple divisions. The right candidate for this role is willing to roll up their sleeves and dive into the day-to-day operations of a small accounting department where managing multiple priorities is a key to success.
This role reports to the Assistant Controller.
General Ledger Accounting - Maintain lead schedules for various balance sheet accounts and record related entries, including intercompany, fixed assets and prepaid expenses.
Ad Sales Accounting & Collections - Assist with accounting for digital advertising sales as company ramps up efforts to monetize existing properties, including invoicing, reconciliations between ads purchased and ads run, and application of payments received.
Monthly Close - Reconcile various bank accounts. Prepare and record entries for the monthly close, including reclasses and accruals.
Audit - Assist with preparation of audit schedules, providing document support and managing inquiries for two annual financial statement audits.
Account Payable Support - Act as backup for the entire accounts payable payment process, including batch preparation, data transfer to general ledger and payment setup using online banking platform.
Treasury Operations - Recurring participation in the payables process, including reconciliation of proposed payments batches to general ledger, coding verification and cash management.
Tax and Compliance - Interface with outside tax professionals to provide information required for income tax returns, 990 and various operational filings - e.g. sales tax returns, commercial rent tax, census data requests.
Accounts Receivable - Prepare invoices for contractual arrangements; record contribution revenue and prepare documentation for support.
Variance Analysis - Analyze, explain and adjust budget variances as needed on a monthly basis.
Controls and Process Improvement - Play an active role in continuing evaluation of control environment to ensure accuracy of reporting data is maintained.
Background & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field
3+ years of experience, preferably with a mix of public and private accounting roles
Understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
General familiarity with the company's various lines of business - feature films, podcasting, television series, website operations, online ad sales
Experience with accounting for digital advertising sales and the related reconciliations required
Familiarity with online banking and merchant account platforms
Experience with accounting for multiple entities and transactions that flow between them including licensing arrangements, overhead allocations and loans
Previous experience with non-profit accounting is a plus
Understanding of accounting for subsidiaries and consolidations with foreign currency implications
Comfortable with MS Office and accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics GP) in an OS environment
Well-organized, possesses problem-solving skills, able to prioritize and attentive to detail. This is a hands on position and at times requires digging into historical data to resolve current issues
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to roll-up your sleeves and get things done in startup environment.
Self-starter who is a detail-oriented, and enthusiastic team player.
