Part Time Job
Job Summary:
Our Part Time Reporter-Researchers play a foundational role on the ESPN Digital Storytelling Team. Whether assisting with reporting on long-form stories, editing short pieces, researching potential stories, or fact-checking stories to protect the credibility of our journalism brand, the Reporter-Researcher is an key entry role in the editorial group.
More specifically:
Fact-checking and research tasks will be one core element of the position, protecting the credibility of the brand by ensuring the accuracy of our long-form content. In the case of legally sensitive stories, Reporter-Researchers will be responsible for making critical decisions, working with sources and with writers and assigning editors to verify the accuracy of sourcing and information. To be successful requires independent and critical thinking skills, and resourcefulness.
Editing assignments will include story- or line-editing short pieces and for packages published online.
Reporting assignments may include data visuals and assisting more senior writers with reporting on larger features.
Writing assignments may include short features and pieces for ESPN.com.
Generating story ideas, attending editorial planning and pitch meetings, and staying abreast of the news and current trends among sports fans and athletes will all be elements of this role, which is both creative and detail-oriented. Responsibilities:
• Rigorously fact-check long-form stories and other editorial content in accordance with editorial guidelines.
• Accept editing and reporting assignments as needed.
• Perform original research and reporting for stories and packages. Do supplemental data gathering on select stories as needed.
• Participate in story development and brainstorming idea meetings with editors.
• Backread preview links, along with the departmental manager, as a final step toward ensuring the accuracy of digital stories.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of two years of professional experience in journalism or a related field.
• Prior fact-checking / reporting experience at a major circulation media outlet.
• Passion for sports.
• Experience in public records' research and resources.
• Knowledge of basic libel law.
• Facility with the Internet and knowledge of what sites are reliable and authoritative.
• Understanding of media ethics and journalism standards
Required Education
• High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent
