Job Summary:
?News Editor is a management role on ESPN's Universal News Group. News editors compile, edit and post news reports to all of ESPN's platforms including TV, digital, mobile, radio, social, alerts and Bottom Line, using information from ESPN reporters, wire services and other news sources. News editors evaluate news for accuracy, fairness and completeness. They write newswires, compile stories, write headlines, adding additional information (such as video, audio, research information, etc.) and work directly with reporters and producers in the field. News editors are responsible for making judgments on story play across all platforms. This job will be based in our Bristol newsroom and involves working as part of a collegial team in a high-stakes, deadline-driven atmosphere where accuracy is key.
Responsibilities:
• Key part of the team charged with gathering, evaluating, interpreting and packaging news fairly, accurately and consistently across all ESPN entities for viewers, users and listeners
• Works independently and is comfortable making timely news decisions in an urgent manner with little or no supervision
• Participates in compiling, prioritizing and highlighting important and interesting news content for all platforms
• Demonstrates ability to line-edit and recommend news entries for digital, print, mobile, television, and social content from reporters
• Writes and rewrites news stories from a variety of sources and for a variety of presentations
• Uses sports knowledge and journalistic judgment to help determine the agenda, concepts and content of assigned sports news stories
• Creates, develops, organizes and edits content of assigned sports news stories
• Helps determine style, edits copy to meet established tone and theme requirements, enhances assigned content
Basic Qualifications:
• Significant experience in journalism
• High proficiency at writing, reporting and shaping stories in all stages of development
• Excels in deadline situations. Has regularly demonstrated ability to produce high-quality content under significant time constraints
• A minimum of 7 years of experience in journalism, making editorial and content decisions
• Recognized ability as a content editor who can be assigned to manage lower-level editors
• Has high-level knowledge of several technology platforms and editing software packages; readily applies new development
• Has an appreciation of biggest news stories and trends in sports, as well as knowledge of the top teams, players and leagues
• Has an understanding of editorial policies and strategies, and how they apply to ESPN
• Has working level of sports reporting and news packaging processes and the ability to gather, interpret and create assigned sports news stories
• Has a higher level of knowledge of real-time sports news production
• Has a higher knowledge regarding technological advances in animation, video editing and graphics Has and applies a level of knowledge of what story ideas and concepts to use for assigned sports news stories
• Strong communication/interpersonal skills
Required Education
• High school degree or equivalent
Preferred Education
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, preferred
