Job Summary:
ESPN Associate Editor Social will oversee the daily creation and curation of content for a variety of ESPN-branded social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, with a focus on UFC. Editors must be able to develop unique and compelling content that will thrive in mobile/social environments. They must have or develop an awareness of the operations of multiple ESPN units, as well as skillsets against multiple content types (text, video, and photo) in order to collaborate successfully in identifying and/or developing up-to-the-minute content.
The ESPN social team is a group of hard-working, sports-loving individuals who are dedicated to finding new ways to interact with fans on social platforms. A General Editor, Social Media will be responsible for developing and distributing content that will thrive on ESPN-branded social media accounts across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. An ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience writing social copy under pressure, creating videos that are optimized for social, and editing visuals that are optimized for social. A General Editor, Social Media will also lead meetings, compose comprehensive event/project plans, analyze the success of social initiatives using metrics as the guiding force, and lead peers in coverage windows. Candidates must have or develop an awareness of the operations of multiple ESPN units, as well as skillsets against multiple content types (text, video, photo) in order to collaborate successfully in identifying and/or developing up-to-the-minute content.
Responsibilities:
• Create content (visual, video, text) that is optimized for social platforms, specifically Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
• Manage content planning and strategy for specific tier-3 (larger scale) cross-account initiatives
• Edit social copy for accuracy and consistency; ensuring all social posts meet established standards for journalistic reporting, tone, and subject matter
• Make real-time decisions regarding social media posts at various stages of development
• Potential for assigning work to select editors and designers
• Maintain proficiency and knowledge in all the latest social media trends and best practices
• Sports take place on nights, weekends and holidays -- and those shifts will be regular and required
Basic Qualifications:
• At least 3 years' experience working in a fast-paced social media environment with content creation responsibilities or 5 years' relevant experience
• Advanced knowledge of current sports, including teams, players, storylines, and forward-facing media personnel
• Skilled in social media comprehension and execution across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
• Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong understanding of journalistic standards and news judgement
• Ability to work quickly and juggle multiple tasks during a typical work day
• Ability to shape content at various stages of development
• Skilled in interpreting and applying data to decision making
• Appreciation and understanding of popular culture that contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN's social media followers
Preferred Qualifications:
• Video editing experience
• After Effects/Premiere/Photoshop experience
• Advanced knowledge of the latest social media and tech trends
Required Education
• Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, online/multimedia or related field OR a high school diploma and a suitable* combination of related training and experience.
