Job Summary:
The Editorial Manager, Science is responsible for delivering world-class editorial projects across the full spectrum of National Geographic's multi-platform content, while managing and co-leading coverage with general supervision around specific expert topic areas, from the planet's oceans to outer space, and frontiers of human health. She/he/they should be is passionate about storytelling and story development and will manage team members related to specialty interest to commission and edit work in related topic areas to fulfill an extensive publishing calendar. As both a topic expert and strong generalist, this editor will conceive, assign, and edit a wide range of stories-from short-form reported pieces to long-form literary features to complex multimedia content packages-while guiding National Geographic in how to best adapt, plan, and prioritize coverage on the Science beat and beyond and managing resources to bring a forward-thinking editorial sensibility to our team.
Editorial Storytelling Strategy/Direction:
• Manage the development and execution of an innovative multi-platform strategy for National Geographic's editorial areas in collaboration with the Director of Features.
• Develop excellent and engaging editorial storytelling that strengthens our print and digital presence and drives email acquisition and subscriptions, along with social follows and engagement
Team Leadership:
• Supervise a team of talented senior and/or storytelling editors to ensure their work aligns with the brand's multi-platform objectives and strategy. Lead science and other core coverage with a spirit of collaboration, consistency, honesty, nimbleness in a fast-paced environment. Team members should anticipate receiving feedback that is both clear and candid to further their development.
• Cultivate a cohesive, empowered team that executes print & digital storytelling at scale, with creative excellence, and within budgets
Project Direction:
• Provide creative direction for multi-platform assignments, ensuring editorial aligns with visual narratives and themes while collaborating with the implementation of interactive and immersive storytelling techniques, leveraging all storytelling techniques as required.
• Excellent and engaging editorial storytelling that strengthens our print and digital presence and drives performance against our KPIs
Collaboration with Print & Digital Teams:
• Manage other editors, to build exceptional print experiences that meet user needs, and translate to digital stories while coordinating closely with copy and research departments to ensure story accuracy and best practices.
• Publish work with logical and effective news value, executed efficiently and thoughtfully leveraging all assets, including text, maps, graphics, etc.
Innovation and Technology:
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and tools in the editorial space, implementing innovative approaches that elevate the multi-platform experience.
• Create innovative immersive stories within the constraints of our technological limitations
Enhancing Workflow:
• Partner with other Multi-platform team leaders to create a strong workflow and touchpoints both within the department and across disciplines.
• Build highly efficient workflow and structured databases that improve information sharing and create efficiencies
Events and Outreach:
• Work with Director of Features and other senior leadership to create recurring moments and events that enhance the brand's visibility, such as special issues and presentations. Foster relationships with external partners, freelancers, and organizations to expand the network and potential collaborations.
• Create stronger brand presence and external relationships that drive improved creative output
Minimum Qualifications: Experience:
• Minimum of 6 years of experience as an editor and/or writer in areas related to Science, Health, and Human Interest
• Track record of strong success in generating coverage that drives conversation around related topics areas
• Must be able to work in our Washington, DC office 4x/week (Monday – Thursday)
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree
