Assignment Editor (WGA)
Job Summary:
ABC NEWS WASHINGTON is hiring an ASSIGNMENT EDITOR.
The DC-based Assignment Editor (WGA) is at the center of all newsgathering and is critical to the editorial and logistical management of the news cycle in DC. He/she must be highly motivated and deeply interested in presidential politics, executive branch developments, and other news in the Washington region.
Responsibilities:
The Assignment Editor will work at the nexus of editorial and logistics coordinating coverage of breaking and ongoing news stories, assigning appropriate staff including correspondents, producers and digital journalists, coordinating and supporting field newsgathering teams and working with logistics and operations to ensure the needs of the field teams are being met. He/she will monitor various media platforms for breaking and ongoing news stories; he/she must be adept at locating, verifying and clearing social content for all platforms while multi-tasking and making decisions quickly under deadline. The Assignment Editor will work directly with all ABC News broadcasts as well as ABC News 24-hour Digital Channel, Digital Text, NewsOne, Radio and DC beats to identify and pitch interesting local, regional, national and international stories.
Basic Qualifications:
A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in broadcast news. The Assignment Editor must have a strong editorial background, be capable of working in a fast-paced, high pressure work environment with demonstrated strong interest in covering key government and politics, as well as general news. This assignment editor's schedule will be a combination of weekdays and weekends. Familiarity with the Washington beats and the DC region preferred. Must be a member or willing to join the Writers Guild of America.
