Discovery, Inc., the new global leader in real life entertainment with powerful brands such as Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel, is searching for a Vice President of Global Tax Reporting to join the Global Tax Team.
Job Description
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Global Tax (New York), the Vice President of Global Tax Reporting is responsible for coordination of EY Co-Source engagement and all management controls related to income tax accounting and reporting. This position has significant latitude for independent judgment and initiative.
Responsibilities
Accounting for Income Taxes (40%)
1. Responsible for controls over accounting for income taxes (ASC 740)
2. Team with Discovery and co-sourced global tax reporting team (Ernst & Young) located in Maryland, London, Miami, India and Singapore
3. Manage quarterly PWC audit process
4. Review 10-K footnote disclosures
5. Ensure accuracy of forecasted income on a legal entity basis for use in Q1-Q3 tax provisions
a. Interface with FP&A and sign off on quarterly full-year legal entity income forecasts to provide to the EY Co-Source team
6. Partner with Transfer Pricing team on business changes impacting transfer pricing calculations
7. Liaise with operating management on tax issues and accounting staff on tax accounting issues
8. Ownership of judgmental global ASC 740 issues including, but not limited to:
a. Manage global uncertain tax position reserve process and inventory
b. Valuation allowance assessments
9. Ownership of Master Financial Data for Tax to ensure tax sensitive data is available to EY Co-Source
Forecasted Income Taxes – Management Reporting, Tax Planning and Strategy (30%)
1. Interface with FP&A and sign off on legal entity monthly full-year income forecasts
2. Liaise with EY team to prepare and monitor EVP Tax Dashboards
3. Participate in modeling of tax impacts resulting from legislative changes, planning, M&A, etc.
4. Involved in the development of tax planning initiatives/strategies and recommendations to ensure the most effective tax position and cash impact
5. Assist in the analysis of the tax impact of proposed transactions and develop tax efficient approaches for each transaction
6. Coordinate and resolve tax issues related to mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations and expansion
7. State tax planning support
8. Monitor production tax credits and incentives
9. Summarize and present tax information to various functions
Compliance & Audits (25%) (Consider renaming ‘Oversight of Compliance and Controversy’)
1. Ensure all required returns, reports, and payments are timely filed and appropriately documented
2. Determine proper treatment and documentation of domestic transactions in US tax returns
3. Coordinate with VP, Transfer Pricing to ensure all cross-border transactions and transfer pricing issues are properly documented and supported for tax filing purposes
4. Manage IDR responses for all federal and state income tax audits
5. Liaise with co-source team to develop responses to inquiries from various tax authorities
6. Tax notice management and resolution
Legislation (5%)
1. Keep abreast of tax law changes in the US to identify potential planning opportunities or issues
2. Review proposed and enacted legislation to determine impact and need for additional tax reserves
Leadership
1. Partner with EVP, Global Tax, EY Co-Source team, SVP International Tax Planning, SVP – Tax, International Networks, VP, Transfer Pricing
2. Manage a performance culture by actively coaching and mentoring direct reports and broader staff, providing feedback and developing employees.
3. Proactively establish strong relationships with all key stakeholders, including operations and finance management, as well as external tax advisors. Understand, anticipate and balance the competing objectives of stakeholders.
4. Ensure that the company maintains up-to-date tax expertise and awareness of federal and state laws and their impact.
5. Lead or participate in process improvement activities to redesign, standardize and automate tax accounting and reporting processes.
6. Maintain strong relationship with external auditor. Interface with outside tax consultants (public accounting and legal tax counsel) and other professional associates in the exchange of tax information.
7. Provide leadership and direction to Senior Manager and Manager located in Knoxville, TN’s US Shared Services Center.
Requirements
* Demonstrated hands-on approach and success in working in a team-based environment
* Proven ability to remain agile and innovative during periods significant change
* Previous change management experience
* Experience with on-line tax research products
* Proficient with Excel
* Process and control acumen
* Strong project management skills
* Travel (25% if in TN, 40% if in NY)
* Masters Degree in Accounting required, Masters of Tax preferred
* 10 years of related experience with at least 5 years in a public accounting firm
* CPA required
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States
