The Role
As VP, Docs & Specials, you will be a critical part of the team responsible for Discovery’s direct-to-consumer product. The right person for this role has a background at a streaming platform is a producer at heart, with excellent taste in content and strong filmmaker relationships, as well as a well-developed sense of taste in Lifestyle programming (True Crime & Mystery, Food & Home, Life & Style, etc).
Responsibilities
• Helping develop and execute strategy and vision for original docs for DTC with a focus on Lifestyle.
• Oversee the development and production (or acquisition) of DTC original docs:
• Take pitches from producers and filmmakers, self-generate and self-package ideas
• Attend film festivals to source and identify documentaries for acquisition and distribution on DTC
• Supervise outside production companies on to ensure high quality, timely and on-budget development, production and delivery.
• Inform and involve key internal departments (business affairs & legal, production management, marketing / PR, etc) on projects throughout all stages of the pipeline to ensure smooth execution, and to maximize their value to the company.
• Perform in a leadership role and manage members of the DTC Docs team
Requirements
* Must have a minimum of 2 years work experience in content at a streaming platform or premium network.
* Bachelor’s degree in related field or an equivalent combination of skills, training and hands-on experience.
* Minimum of 6 years hands-on production & development experience in non-fictional genres and feature documentary.
* Experience sourcing and negotiating films in a festival context; relationship with film sales agents, distributors, and filmmakers
* Proven record of demonstrated creativity with an ability to generate new ideas and translate them into high-quality documentaries.
* Ability to manage outside producers, build credibility and strong working relationships with other internal executives and generate commitment to goals.
* Knowledge of all aspects of contemporary production and post-production capabilities.
* Outstanding editorial judgment and creative abilities, strong verbal and written communications skills, and demonstrated leadership skills.
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
