The Role
Directs and controls discrete legal and/or business affairs activities. Is accountable for the performance and results of teams focused on various legal functions/activities, develops plans, including business, operational and/or organizational priorities. The ideal candidate can be based in New York.
Responsibilities
1. Provides legal services to protect the regular and special interests of assigned client departments or productions and serves as general counsel to those clients
2. Advises executives, or individual productions, on legal matters in connection to their business or creative activities
3. Conducts negotiations in support of drafting agreements
4. Drafts and supervises drafting of highly complex agreements for development, production and licensing of programming, rights acquisitions and clearances, engagements and descriptions of services to be rendered, including talent releases, sponsorship agreements, web development transactions and collective bargaining agreements
5. Prepares and participates in litigation matters
6. Directs subordinate directors who oversee assigned legal functions
7. Approves some policies and major operating procedures
8. Negotiates complex deals, often at top management levels, that affect major aspects of functions performance
9. Directs multiple managers and professional individual contributor staff
10. Makes decisions guided by resource availability and short-term functional or brand objectives
11. May spend up to 20% of time as an individual contributor performing assignments that require a higher level of experience or technical expertise than subordinates
Requirements
* JD and at least 10-15 years of experience, including a management role
* Ability to manage complex internal and external stakeholder relationships
* People management skills
* Conflict resolution skills
* Uses broad functional/technical and business knowledge to anticipate and mitigate business and regulatory issues that affect own area of responsibility
* Understanding of current issues and the strategies used to guide the function
* Ability to define and resolve complex technical, operational and/or organizational challenges in the function/category
* Proficient working with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, MS Outlook
* Attention to detail, accuracy, and strong organizational skills
* Strong organizational skills with ability to act independently and responsibly
* Capacity to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Must be able to work collaboratively with team members
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States
