POSITION SUMMARY:
The Colorado Rockies are currently seeking a full-time Director of Research & Development to lead the Club's Research & Development Department, which encompasses the Club's Baseball Systems and Baseball Analysis areas of responsibility. This individual will report to and work with the Assistant General Manager, Baseball Operations, in establishing the direction the Club will take in progressing its baseball research and development capabilities (including the on-field use of analytics), growing its proprietary applications, and managing the continuous progression of data and technology in the industry.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Management of Baseball Systems and Baseball Analysis areas:
• Work with Baseball Operations leadership in the hiring, development, and motivation of Research & Development employees.
• Manage and direct operations of the Baseball Systems group, including data engineers, data architects, and research and development personnel.
• Manage daily activities of the Baseball Analysis group, focusing on the advancement of the Club's research and development capabilities.
• Daily management of departmental budget, which will include but not be limited to the ability to deliver results while working within budget constraints.
• Data and Information Management:
• Responsible for use of data and information in all facets of the Baseball Operations Department.
• Lead the design, testing, implementation, and maintenance of analytic and technical systems to provide timely, baseball-related information to decision-makers within the Baseball Operations Department.
• Collaborate with Baseball Operations Department personnel to define and develop new software applications.
• Optimize baseball applications to ensure successful implementation across multiple platforms, including mobile and web environments.
• Identify new technologies, systems, and solutions to improve capabilities of baseball applications.
• Continued Development and Education of Department:
• Must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills on Research & Development topics to audiences with varying understanding and background in these specialized areas.
• Focus on expanding the knowledge base of the Baseball Operations department.
• Interact with scouts, players, coaches, and Baseball Operations staff regarding the implementation and use of research and development.
• Development of Analytics:
• Assist in the design, testing, development, implementation, and maintenance of the tools and systems necessary to evaluate players, strategies, industry trends, etc., including the use of advanced baseball metrics and predictive models.
• Collaborate to continue the advancement of the Club's proprietary metrics.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum of five years of experience in data science or analytics.
• Advanced degree preferred, with Bachelor's degree or completion of immersive technical program required, in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Web Development, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
• Experience with and working understanding of current technologies, programs, and coding languages, which may include but is not limited to:
• MySQL, or other relational databases;
• Model-view-controller framework, such as Angular.io, Reacts.js or Ember.js;
• JavaScript, CoffeeScript, Node.js;
• Web development tools, such as HTML, CSS, LESS, Bootstrap, etc.;
• Data visualization library, such as D3.js;
• Variety of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data formats including delimited files, XML, JSON and natural language text;
• Programming languages, such as Python, R or Scala;
• ''Big Data'' tools, such as Hadoop, Hive, Spark or Presto;
• AWS Cloud services, such as EC2, RDS, and S3;
• Experience with data workflow tools, such as Luigi or Airflow.
• Ability to diagnose, isolate, and resolve complex problems using debug techniques.
• Extensive experience collaborating with other members of a team to accomplish common coding and/or programming goals.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
• Passion for baseball, familiarity with current baseball research, technology, and analysis.
• Experience in project management and personnel management.
• Ability to develop and maintain successful working relationship with members of the Club's Front Office.
• Experience in professional sports preferred.
• This position requires strong management and leadership skills, as well as a demonstrated ability for independent curiosity and a commitment to excellence while leading a team.
WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK SCHEDULE:
• Ability to work a flexible schedule with long hours, including weekend, evenings, and holidays.
• Some travel will be required.
SALARY RANGE:
$140,000-$170,000 per year. This is a regular status, full-time position eligible for all company benefits.
