The Job
CNN's digital EMEA team is seeking a Weekend Editor to oversee and shape its weekend coverage. The successful candidate will drive coverage on breaking news events, commission, edit and occasionally write stories, coordinate with digital and TV newsgathering teams and work closely with the digital programming team globally to ensure CNN's coverage is accurate, smart and distinctive.
The Daily
• Shape, commission and oversee all weekend EMEA digital news coverage, including breaking news, features and other enterprise news content.
• Plan digital coverage and output for EMEA news events happening on weekends.
• Work with other digital editors to ensure a pipeline of enterprise work for weekend publication.
• Use audience insights to inform and improve EMEA weekend coverage.
• Edit and run point on big news stories during times of lower staffing.
• Use an understanding of how news travels across digital platforms to craft strong headlines that work for different platforms.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across the organisation.
• Work with teams deployed in the field who are often in high pressure environments.
• Ensure that editorial standards are met and delivered across stories by commissioning effectively, providing editorial guidance and routing sensitive queries appropriately.
• Manage a small number of direct reports and provide development and direction for career growth and progression.
The Essentials
• Experienced at editing and commissioning a range of stories and overseeing them to publication.
• Exceptional editorial judgement and knowledge of the news agenda.
• High sense of ownership and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive and respectful working culture.
• Experience working across teams and with stakeholders to execute stories and coverage.
• A track record of leading ambitious digital storytelling and a desire to produce groundbreaking work that pushes boundaries in terms of form/format.
• Knowledge of growing digital audiences and deepening engagement with them.
• Strong technical capabilities including working on different content management systems and news operating systems.
• Comprehensive understanding of journalistic standards and media law.
