This is a Full Time Job
CNN Weather is seeking an experienced, digital-first editor to help guide and sharpen the team's storytelling during the evenings (Monday through Friday 12p-9p ET). The successful candidate has experience in the weather editorial space, including forecasts, and thrives in the breakneck pace of extreme weather. They also have strong news judgment and writing skills, and a familiarity with digital video best practices.
This person is a strong collaborator who can work with meteorologists or highly specialized journalists, as well as breaking news reporters and correspondents around the world. They will help keep us sharp on daily priorities by ensuring weather editorial is clear, concise and engaging.
Remote work will be considered.
Your Role Accountabilities…
• Help execute the coverage plan around the weather stories of the day, whether it's a hurricane making landfall or a series of expert-led, short-format vertical videos
• Pitch, assign, edit and occasionally write in formats that go beyond the traditional article, including real-time breaking news updates, video scripts, social media posts, TV package scripts, mobile-first projects and explanatory journalism
• Shepherd stories that explain how our natural world works and that leave our audience feeling informed, confident and intellectually rewarded
• Work with the team to ensure the stories, updates, videos, graphics and social media posts we publish are accurate and fair
• Work with visual designers and editors to enhance our storytelling
• Occasionally assist the climate editors on daily and distinctive stories about the impact of the climate crisis and the race to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy
Qualifications & Experience… -
• At least 5 years of digital reporting and editing experience, including fast-moving breaking news, in extreme weather, climate, science or a related space
• A sharp POV on how to structure and frame weather-related content, particularly forecasts, for national audiences and local audiences
• A passion for science and the natural world and a strong desire to find and tell these interesting stories to an audience
• Exceptional communication skills within a newsroom – you should be able to communicate the value of your work internally as much as you can externally
• Analytics experience to understand what makes audiences tick
• At least a basic understanding of weather-related data and terminology, including which government agencies are responsible for certain forecasts
• Ability and willingness to work outside regular hours during major weather events
• A clear understanding of style and grammar
• A college degree or equivalent
