CNN's Climate & Weather team is seeking a journalist to create graphics, interactives
and an automated library of data visualizations to help inform our audiences during
extreme weather and personalize the most urgent crisis of our time.
This is a unique role in which you will work within a specialized team on high-impact
journalism. Applicants for this position should have experience using programming tools
to work with large, raster datasets, and the skills to visualize that data in the best way to
help our audience understand the risk and impact of extreme weather and climate
change.
The ideal candidate has strong data analysis skills alongside software development or
programming experience. They are comfortable working with large, global datasets that
span space and time. This candidate has honed the ability to contextualize complex
topics for a general audience. They have their finger on the pulse of emerging trends in
visual news.
Finally, the successful candidate is a team-oriented collaborator who works well with
and elevates their teammates and colleagues across the company.
Your Role Accountabilities...
• Work with teammates to develop data-driven stories and visualizations focused
on climate change, weather and climate solutions
• Create and edit graphics and visuals, including maps, charts, interactives and
other visual storytelling formats
• Work alongside other data visuals journalists and reporters in the CNN
newsroom
• Work with the subject-matter experts on the team to cultivate strong sourcing for
data related to the beat, and seek out new sources
• Ensure our analyses, stories and visualizations uphold rigorous journalistic
standards
• Develop an understanding of the broader CNN digital infrastructure; network and
collaborate with other visuals and product teams in the newsroom to share data
and skills
Qualifications & Experience...
• At least 5 years of newsroom or comparable web visualization experience and
experience working with climate, weather, environment data
• High proficiency in modern web development technologies and workflows (HTML,
CSS, JavaScript, git, Svelte)
• High proficiency in data analysis and coding (Python, SQL, R, etc.) is a must
• Experience with large raster/gridded data sets
• Mapping and graphics skills (D3, AI2html, QGIS, Mapbox)
• Experience with data pipelines such as Github Actions workflows
• The ability to translate complex story and data ideas to the broader newsroom and
audience
• A desire to experiment and push storytelling forward and the ability to think
creatively about how we use data in the service of journalism
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment are crucial
• Impeccable news and story-framing judgment
• A collaborative, team-oriented attitude
• Strong attention to detail

Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to external market data, internal equity, location, skill set, experience, and/or performance. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery's total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $77,000.00 - $143,000.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros.
