You are a Washington junkie, a policy wonk, a voracious news consumer on any and every platform. You are an aggressive, relentless journalist – tracking every incremental development in a story, nosing out new reporting angles, and framing stories in a fresh, edgy way. You want to get a foot in the door of helping run news coverage at the world's largest news organization. You are our next Washington Senior Producer.
The Senior Producer will be responsible for supporting the Washington beats (White House, Capitol Hill, National Security, Justice and Agencies) to manage the editorial flow of stories during the day. The role will support beat leaders' work with reporters and pushing forward the exclusive, in-depth reporting that is a CNN hallmark, and setting the table for the day ahead This would include helping approve reporting and ensuring clarity in writing, maintaining vigilance on developing stories to ensure CNN reporting is accurate, urgent, and presented with clarity and context. They will be responsible for communicating to shows and digital about developments and assignments. The senior editor will also be a fill-in for beat leaders when they are off.
The role requires rapid response to breaking news, assigning reporting and resources in coordination with regional and national news editors, and strong copy-editing skills.
Your Role Accountabilities…
• Oversee developments in both active reporting and emerging stories across the day ensuring CNN is as competitive at night as during the day
• Provide leadership to CNN shows to ensure they track up-to-the-minute developments and reporter assignments
• Edit and disseminate news alerts on tight deadlines
• Collaborate with beat leaders, planning producers, and desk editors on staffing or camera deployments for a competitive posture
• Provide direction to reporters and producers
• Update senior DC newsgathering leaders on an ongoing basis.
Qualifications and Experience…
• Impeccable written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Able to quickly and efficiently write clear, tight news alerts for internal and external audiences.
• Must possess 5+ years' experience in cable, national or major media markets, with experience supervising the creation and editing of daily news content for digital platforms preferred.
• Demonstrate outstanding news judgment, sharp story-editing skills, and a reflex of looking ahead for what's new and next. Passionate and competitive about political and Washington News.
• Must maintain a flexible, problem-solving mentality.
