Responsibilities
The Deputy News Editor works at the heart of the editorial team by assigning, editing and writing news stories during Asia's business day. The role involves updating the CNBC.com website, communicating across teams and monitoring for and covering breaking news – all within tight deadlines.
Responsibilities:
• Act as a hot-seater for CNBC.com, managing and updating the content on the site by using strong editorial judgment and knowledge of business and financial news
• Act as a copy and news editor for CNBC.com, making sure the site's stories, features, video descriptions and interactive content are of the highest quality and published in a timely manner
• Communicate in a timely and clear manner with CNBC teams across platforms and countries
• Write stories on a variety of subjects including financial markets, business trends, economy and economic policy
• Ensure the smooth running of the website, including updating of main International homepage and Asia and Europe news pages with headlines and breaking news
• Curate the website by selecting stories from wires and partners
• Produce stories in the content management system
• Assign work to other members of the team and coordinate production to ensure website is updated at all times
• Remain in close communication with television producers to ensure coordination of stories
• Deputize for the Asia Pacific Editor
• Monitor and assess the performance of CNBC's digital content using analytics tools
Qualifications
/Requirements
Requirements:
- In -depth knowledge of the content and subject material covered on CNBC and a strong interest in financial markets, economics, technology and politics
- Strong copy-editing skills under tight deadlines, especially the ability to spot mistakes, errors and typos
- Previous experience in updating a website, hot-seating or hot-desking at a wire service is preferred
- Understanding of global financial markets and how events in different economies and markets affect each other
- Ability to multi-task and remain calm in a fast-paced news environment
- Ability to work as part of a team and across all departments and locations, ensuring a smooth-running website that is 100 percent accurate
- Excellent verbal communication skills, coupled with strong research and succinct writing skills
- Demonstrated self-starter, with the confidence to make decisions quickly in a fast paced news environment
- Knowledge of social media, especially Twitter
- Fluency in English
- Flexibility in working shifts, some of which start very early in the morning or on weekends
Desired characteristics:
- Experience of working in content management systems
- Experience of working for a leading wire service or business news website
- Experience managing and making decisions about news coverage
- Familiarity with one or more Asian languages is a plus
