Job Summary / General Description:
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller is responsible for managing all Accounting functions for the organization. This will include direct oversight of the Accounting and Accounts Payable teams, with a focus on financial and general ledger reporting. Furthermore, this role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring processes, procedures, and internal controls to protect company assets. This role requires a candidate with strong technical accounting knowledge and demonstrated business acumen to achieve tactical and strategic objectives that support your teams and the business.
The successful candidate will be a highly process oriented individual who can lead transformation in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. This includes excellent leadership capabilities, proven business partnering and outstanding communication skills. Moreover, the candidate will be experienced at working effectively across multiple levels of an organization and building successful cross functional partnerships.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Leads the team in completing an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close. Supervising the general ledger team to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, retail inventory, and cash disbursements. Maintains supporting documentation for compliance with internal controls and current company policies.
• Leadership of the accounts payable team, including the review of check requests and payment runs. Participant in the cash flow planning process, particularly as it relates to accounts payable disbursements.
• Primary point of contact for all audits, including the fiscal year-end audit and other league audits as required. Review all audit schedules prepared by the staff for thoroughness and completeness.
• Main contact for the organization's tax preparation professionals. Responsible for preparing year-end tax workpapers and other interim requests as required.
• Responsible for local tax reporting to the appropriate governmental entities, including sales tax, use tax, and commercial activity tax.
• Review all account analysis and reconciliations generated by staff taking corrective action where necessary.
• Collaboration with the NBA league office on required reporting. Reviewing all league related revenue distributions and working with the accounting team to ensure proper revenue recognition.
• Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions and preparing technical accounting memos when necessary.
Core Requirements / Competencies:
• Education – Bachelor's Degree in accounting with a CPA required.
• Experience – Minimum of five (5) years in an accounting leadership role with increasing responsibilities. Public accounting experience strongly preferred, but not required.
• Leadership – Proven ability to lead and motivate teams: achieving organizational focus on key priorities, providing clear direction, delegating, actively communicating and coaching/mentoring.
• Technology – Knowledge of Great Plains or similar accounting platform is a benefit. Experience with WorkPlace (procurement), Counterpoint (retail), and Sage (fixed assets) also a plus. Base level knowledge of SQL would be an additional benefit.
