Department: Baseball Operations – Health and Performance
Job Title: Mental Skills Coordinator
Reports To: Senior Director of Health and Performance
Job Status: Salary, Exempt
Location: Goodyear, AZ – up to 50% Travel (Domestic and International)
Job Purpose: The Cincinnati Reds mental skills coordinator is to provide mental skills training to both players and staff at the major and minor league levels. The primary focus is to carry out the vision set forth by the Reds health and performance department (H&P), player development staff, major league staff, and to maximize the mental skills within each player.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites:
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary staff, including but not limited to – MLB staff, player development staff, front office, H&P staff, scouting, and analytics.
• Individualize specific plans for major and minor league players and staff to foster a mindset that gives them the strategies to seek out opportunities to grow and manage adversity.
• Develop healthy relationships with both players and staff and communicate consistently with other members of H&P, player development, and the mental skills staff.
• Assist the Senior Director of Health and Performance in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the mental skills program.
• Early identification of potential mental health illness and refer to our wellness coordinator.
• Travel to select major league home series in Cincinnati, minor league affiliates throughout the regular season at key leverage points in the baseball calendar year. Attend spring training, extended spring training, Arizona Rookie League games, and fall/winter camps.
• Be available by phone for players and staff seeking growth in mental skills at all times during employment with the Cincinnati Reds.
• Assist with providing mental skills meetings and presentations during spring training, fall/winter camps. This will require travel from Goodyear, Arizona (home base) to Cincinnati, OH, Dominican Republic, or other off-site training locations.
• Involve the players and staff in the development of the mental skills program decisions.
• Document the services provided to players and staff.
• Assist in research and development within the field of sports psychology to continually progress mental skills programs, the H&P department, and the Reds organization.
• Creativity in delivering high-quality content in unique working conditions.
• Additional duties assigned by the Senior Director of Health and Performance.
Qualifications:
• Experience in professional baseball (preferred).
• Exemplifies high character.
• Demonstrated ability to lead other staff.
• Previous experience working in an interdisciplinary environment.
• Completion of a graduate degree in the field of sport psychology required.
• Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the association of applied sport psychology.
• 2 years working on mental performance strategies with military personnel, collegiate, Olympic, or professional athletes.
• Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Anticipated 2020 Calendar:
• January – 100% in Goodyear, AZ for on-boarding in Reds vision of the role. Some exposures to rehab, and participation in the H&P staff in-service via mental skills presentations.
• February/March – Attend 50% major league ST, and 50% minor league spring training. Have a mental skills station as part of both MLB and MiLB physicals.
• April – Attend 2 MLB home series (6-8games), Attend 1-2 minor league affiliate home series (6-8 games), remainder of time to be spent in Goodyear complex with extended and rehab players.
• May – Attend 2 MLB home series, Attend 1-2 minor league affiliate home series, remainder of time spent in Goodyear with extended and rehab players.
• June – Attend pre-draft and amateur scouting meetings, attend June Draft 1st year player on-boarding process in Goodyear, AZ and remainder of June.
• July – Attend 2 MLB home series, 1 minor league affiliate home series (to short season affiliate to continue working with June draft players), remainder of time in Goodyear, AZ.
• August – Attend 1 MLB home series, attend 2 minor league full season affiliates for EOS goal mental skills goal setting.
• September – Attend ALL MLB home series, remainder of time in Goodyear, AZ.
• October – Attend 1 week of DSL instructs, remainder of time in Goodyear, AZ
• November – Attend any off-season camps, remainder of time OFF for the holidays.
• December – Attend any off-season camps, remainder of time OFF for the holidays.
Expectations:
• Adhere to Cincinnati Reds Organization Policies and Procedures.
• Act as a role model within and outside the Cincinnati Reds Organization.
• Performs duties as workload necessitates.
• Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
• Meet Department productivity standards.
