Job Title: Applied Biomechanics Intern
Department: Baseball Operations - Health & Performance
Reports To: Applied Biomechanist
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Location: Goodyear, AZ
Job Purpose: The Applied Biomechanics Intern is to work as a part of the Applied Sports Science staff to facilitate Applied Biomechanics initiatives at the Reds Player Development Complex in order to aid in the development and optimization of player health and performance. Applied Biomechanics, as defined in this instance, is the application of biomechanics to improve player development, health, and performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Support Applied Biomechanics analysis and R&D to generate insights within Reds pitching and hitting initiatives
• Support the delivery of actionable information that enables the integration between ML and PD staff, Health & Performance staff, and other stakeholders within Baseball Operations
• Assist Applied Biomechanist with the management of biomechanics data which may include tasks such as data entry, cleaning, statistical analysis, written and visual reports, etc.
• Assist with setup, collection, and breakdown of equipment (e.g., force plates, IMUs, motion capture) during biomechanical assessments as needed, including in-game and ad hoc KinaTrax motion capture
• Assist with evaluation (validity, reliability, feasibility) and onboarding of current and new technologies and testing protocols
• Conduct literature and research reviews on topics pertinent to H&P and PD departments
• Assist with maintenance and inventory of sport science equipment
• Support research projects and other Applied Sports Science initiatives as needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Creativity, critical thinking, and sound reasoning to interpret complex information.
• Independent judgment and ability to multitask is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
• Strong work ethic and willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
• High level of interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in visual, written, and verbal form to multiple stakeholders across Baseball Operations.
• Demonstrable experience and knowledge of research design and methodology in the applied setting.
• Experience using basic (e.g., GLM) and advanced (e.g., SPM, FDA, PCA) statistics and time-series analysis.
• Proficiency in data programming and software (e.g., SQL, R, Visual3D).
Experience, Education and Licensure:
• Completed undergraduate degree program in sport or exercise science, kinesiology, or related field; enrolled in graduate degree in sport or exercise science, kinesiology, or related field preferred.
• > 1 year experience working in sports environments with athletes.
Requirements:
• Spoken and written fluency in English.
• Willing to relocate. Position is based in Goodyear, AZ at the Reds Player Development Complex.
