Youth Academy Head Groundskeeper
Department: Grounds Crew
Location: Reds Youth Academy, Cincinnati Ohio
FLSA Status: Salaried, non-exempt
Job Summary
The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining high-quality athletic fields and surrounding grounds to ensure safe, playable and visually appealing conditions for practices, games and events. This role includes turf management, equipment operation, field preparation and general grounds upkeep.
Example: The Academy Heads Groundskeeper supports the Reds Youth Academy by maintaining the facility grounds. This role is critical to ensuring safe and aesthetic playing fields.
Minimum Requirement
Education: Associate's degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, or Plant Science required
Experience: Two (2) years of experience maintaining athletic fields preferred
Skills:
• Knowledge of turf care and groundskeeping practices
• Ability to operate and maintain various groundskeeping equipment and tools
• Understanding of irrigation and drainage systems, pesticides and fertilization applications
• Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities
• Ability to work independently with a high standard of care
• Knowledge of OSHA standards
• Ability to work with outside contractors
Preferred Requirement
Education: Bachelor's degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, or Plant Science required
Experience: 2-5 years of experience maintaining athletic fields preferred

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Duty % of Time
• Field Maintenance: 40%
• Mowing, edging, watering, fertilizing, and reseeding turfgrass area
• Managing natural turfgrass health, including disease control and pest management
• Applying pesticides/herbicides and fertilizers in accordance with regulations
• Perform weekly synthetic field turf maintenance on all indoor & outdoor surfaces
• Monitoring weather conditions to ensure playability and safety
• Field Preparation: 40%
• Setting up and tearing down athletic equipment (bases, mounds, nets, cages, etc.)
• Laying out and marking fields with chalk or paint according to specifications
• Ensuring fields meet safety standards and are ready for games or practices
• Inspecting field conditions and determining playability in cooperation with Academy Director & other parties
• Equipment Operation and Maintenance: 5%
• Operating and maintaining groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and hand tools
• Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on field equipment and facilities
• Maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas
• General Grounds Upkeep: 10%
• Maintaining surrounding grounds areas, including landscaping, shrubs, and trees
• Removing leaves, trash, and debris from grounds and facilities
• Cleaning and maintaining outdoor features like benches, bleachers, and dugouts
• Maintaining and inspecting irrigation systems
• Assisting with snow removal and other seasonal tasks
• Performing general cleanup of facilities, potentially including bleachers, dugouts, and restrooms
• Collaboration and Support: 5%
• Supporting special events, tournaments, and community events hosted at the complex
• Communicating effectively with supervisors and team members
Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Reds Youth Academy Director.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to sit/stand for extended periods
• Lift up to 75lbs occasionally
• Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings.
• Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 50lbs. on a regular basis
• Use of standard office equipment (Microsoft Office)
• The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
• Must have a willingness to work long hours and a variable schedule including weekends and holidays especially during spring, summer, and fall seasons.
