Job Title: Biomechanics Analyst

FLSA: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt
Location: Preferred relocation to Cincinnati, OH, with up to 25% travel nationally
Job Purpose:
We are seeking a Biomechanics Analyst to join the Cincinnati Reds Health & Performance department as part of the Applied Sports Science team. We are looking for someone with the ability to conduct innovative research, utilizing advanced biomechanical analysis to support all areas of Baseball Operations. Working with the Applied Biomechanist, the Biomechanics Analyst will undertake projects that advance our understanding and application of pitching and hitting biomechanics to support player development, health, and performance, and to leverage insights applicable to talent identification, player projections, acquisitions, and performance and injury risk assessments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Design and implement biomechanical statistical models, and/or machine learning techniques, to address a variety of questions dealing with the application of baseball biomechanics data.
• Enhance the delivery of Applied Biomechanics initiatives by preparing written and visual reports that effectively communicate key findings to multiple stakeholders.
• Contribute to biomechanics R&D initiatives leading to innovations in player support, talent identification, player projections, acquisitions, and performance and injury risk assessment.
• Collaborate with IT/Systems, Analytics, and third-party vendors and contractors to manage biomechanics data pipelines, ensure data integrity, and maintain functionality of biomechanics systems and technology.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant scientific literature, internal R&D and analytics, and athlete testing and monitoring to ensure implementation of state-of-the-art biomechanical analysis and methods.
• Collaborate with Applied Sports Science, Health & Performance, Analytics and Major League and Player Development staffs to synthesize information and contribute to the development of holistic, individualized player development, daily preparation, and return-to-play plans with special focus on pitching/hitting development and performance.
• Assist with the identification, evaluation, and onboarding of new technologies and methods that enhance Applied Sports Science and Applied Biomechanics initiatives; support the development of relationships with external partners and vendors for Applied Biomechanics initiatives.
• Assist with the collection, analysis, and communication of human movement data from a variety of sources (on and off-field) as needed.
• Support research projects and other Applied Sports Science initiatives as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Creativity, critical thinking, and sound reasoning to interpret complex information.
• Strong statistical background and be well versed in biomechanical data analysis techniques, as well as having experience of working with a range of human movement technologies and handling big datasets.
• Ability to complete large scale research projects with emphasis on translation into practice.
• Proficiency in data programming and software (e.g. R/Python, SQL, MATLAB, Visual3D).
• Ability to conduct and interpret basic (e.g. GLM) and advanced statistics (e.g. LMM, PCA, time-series analysis) related to biomechanical data.
• Knowledge of machine learning would be advantageous.
• High level of interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in visual, written, and verbal form to multiple stakeholders.
• Independent judgment and ability to multitask is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
• Strong work ethic and willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays in accordance with business demands.
Experience, Education and Licensure:
• Graduate degree in biomechanics (PhD preferred); additional coursework in motor control, advanced statistics, and/or biological disciplines an advantage.
• Demonstrated experience independently managing biomechanics research projects.
• Applied experience in industry or elite sport/performance settings (e.g., collegiate, professional, Olympic, military) beneficial.
• Prior experience in baseball is a plus but is not required.
