Job Title: Applied Sports Science Coordinator
Reports To: Director of Applied Sports Science
FLSA: Full-time salary, Exempt
Location: Goodyear, AZ with scheduled travel to Cincinnati and all Reds affiliate locations throughout the year.
Job Purpose: This role will lead the implementation of the athlete monitoring program, facilitate interdisciplinary player support by on-field and off-field departments, and synthesize information and generate actionable insights for stakeholders throughout Baseball Operations. Sports Science, as defined in this instance, is the application of scientific methods and principles to improve player development, health, and performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage the athlete monitoring program and other off-field testing to ensure systematic implementation throughout the organization during in-season, offseason camps, Rehab, and other Reds organized events.
• Facilitate the synthesis of on-field and off-field data to support the development of holistic, individualized player support, development, and return-to-play plans, as well as Scouting and player evaluation initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with Baseball Operations, Systems & Development, Analytics, and other key personnel to develop and maintain data pipelines and appropriate feedback loops of on-field and off-field data to designated stakeholders.
• Provide summaries and reports of Applied Sports Science initiatives to on-field, off-field, Front Office, and other Baseball Operations stakeholders.
• Collaborate with the Applied Sports Science Director and Biomechanics Manager in the planning, management, and execution of Applied Sports Science and Biomechanics initiatives.
• Identify, evaluate, and onboard new technologies, methodologies, and protocols that enhance on-field, off-field, and other Applied Sports Science initiatives and support the implementation of ad hoc test protocols as needed.
• Hire and manage Applied Sports Science staff at the AZ Player Development Complex, DR Academy, and Minor League Affiliates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively present technical information in a variety of formats to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving to interpret and apply complex information.
• Maintain current knowledge of relevant scientific literature, internal R&D and analytics, and athlete testing and monitoring data.
• Independent judgment and ability to multitask is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
• Demonstrated ability utilizing traditional and advanced statistical approaches in athlete monitoring and applied sport science research.
• Strong work ethic and willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
• Proficiency in R/Python and SQL.
Experience, Education, and Licensure:
• Graduate degree in an exercise science related field; PhD and CPSS or CSCS preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing sport science/athlete monitoring program in elite sport/performance settings (e.g., collegiate, professional, Olympic, military).
Requirements:
• Spoken and written fluency in English.
• Conversational Spanish language fluency preferred.
• Willing to relocate. Position is based in Goodyear, AZ at the Reds Player Development Complex.
