POSITION SUMMARY:
Lead a three-person team in the planning and execution of all physical productions at Center Theatre Group's three theatres - the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre, ensuring the successful interpretation, engineering, realization, and safety of all scenic designs.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assign show and departmental work to the Associate Technical Directors and Shop Supervisor. Ensure everyone in the department has the resources they need to successfully complete their assignments.
• Schedule and conduct Staff Development Reviews annually. As a supervisor provide ongoing feedback, support and advice to the Technical Direction department staff.
• Create and refine paperwork and processes used by the Technical Direction department including drafting templates, checklists, budget spreadsheets, etc., to ensure work is being done as efficiently as possible.
• Budget designs based on designer drawings and adjust/present options to designers as needed.
• Bid shows to commercial scenery shops, supervise the technical design process and provide quality control.
• Supervise and draft construction drawings for shows built in house by CTG.
• Prepare ground plan and section of designs in AutoCAD, including tech design, rigging, and deck drawings. Create and provide drawings required by stage management or other staff and designers.
• Work with the visiting design teams and the Production Staff to achieve workable and safe productions throughout all stages of the production (from design through technical rehearsal). Prepare and disseminate information to in-house staff, vendors, and visiting staff.
• Work with the Production Team to find solutions to technical problems and challenges.
• Estimate and track labor and material costs for productions and advise production management of the potential consequences of any proposed changes.
• Purchase, rent, borrow and pull equipment and hardware as needed. Track and report department and show expenses to allow informed decisions to be made about purchasing.
• Supervise IATSE crew in the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatre in accordance with the applicable IATSE Local 33 contracts.
• Supervise and staff load-in and strikes of Kirk Douglas Theatre productions and outside events, including scenic calls. Take active role as carpenter, rigger or otherwise as needed during load in, build and strike calls.
• Track and update soft good, rigging, tool and equipment inventories. Maintain Tech Specs and Theatre drawings in concert with Production Management.
• Attend production meetings, pre-tech run-thrus, load-ins, technical rehearsals and performances as needed. Keep the Technical staff informed of important developments.
• Create and assemble information required for Fire Permits. Schedule and coordinate inspections of theatres and productions by the Fire Marshal in coordination with Production Management.
• Maintain a safe working environment in the context of the production's design, including, but not limited to: the design and implementation of overhead rigging systems, automation, structural design of staging; the enforcing of applicable fall protection policies; managing crew hours to prevent exhaustion; ensuring that mandatory breaks and meals are taken, etc. Oversee and ensure crew safety on-stage during load-ins and strikes. Perform Hazard Assessments for shows, as needed.
• Engage in other managerial and supervisory duties as may be assigned, and demonstrate a willingness to be flexible and responsive to changes in the scope of job responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge and essential skills
a. Excellent technical skills, scenic construction techniques, rigging, and budget management.
b. Excellent draftsperson, with strong working knowledge of AutoCAD .
c. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.
d. Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal. Ability to work independently or collaboratively with designers, directors and other CTG staff.
e. Experience in managing crews.
f. Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Minimum requirements: Essential functions and abilities
a. Theatrical background and understanding of the theatrical process.
b. Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines. Must have ability to plan projects and work independently.
c. Ability to remain calm and productive in difficult situations demonstrating good ''people skills'' and a sense of humor.
d. Ability to work long hours, i.e. a 40 hour week plus weekends and evenings, as necessary during technical rehearsals.
e. Ability to travel extensively, both inside and outside of the country via plane, automobile, etc.
f. Ability to lift 50 lbs and handle extensive standing, walking, and step-climbing.
g. Ability to drive a car and possession of a valid CA Driver's license.
• Education, Experience and Licensing
a. Significant experience as a Technical Director or Associate Technical Director on productions of a comparable scope.
b. Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience required.
c. CPR/ AED/ First Aid training. Training will be provided by the company
