Originally created in 1996 as an annual fund to support innovative, adventurous theatre artists from Los Angeles, the Sherwood Award was established in memory of Dorothy and Richard E. Sherwood. Both of the Sherwoods were patrons of the arts with a special appreciation for the energy and talent of artists at a catalytic moment in their career who are vanguards in theatre. Richard Sherwood was President of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and President and then chairman of Center Theatre Group's Board of Directors from 1980 until his death in 1993. Dorothy Sherwood created the award to honor her husband and helped shepherd the award process since its inception before her passing in 2018. The award is endowed by the Sherwood family and honors the Sherwoods' passionate commitment to theatre.
The Sherwood Fellow will support Center Theatre Group's Artistic Development Program in the administration of the Sherwood Award. In preparation for assisting in the coordination of the Sherwood Award process, fellow will receive a mentorship in contemporary theatre and gain exposure to contemporary work being presented in Los Angeles.
The aim of Center Theatre Group's Artistic Development Program is to foster and develop a broad range of new theatrical work from artists within the diverse communities of Los Angeles as well as from across the nation and abroad. The Program harnesses the talents and efforts of Center Theatre Group's entire Artistic staff and develops both new plays and musicals and commissions and develops company-created work and a wide array of non-script-based or devised work.
Center Theatre Group's Artistic Development Program utilizes commissions, readings, and workshops, an annual L.A. Writers' Workshop for local playwrights, and partnerships with other theatre makers to encourage collaboration among artists, introduce audiences to new perspectives, and boost Los Angeles' international profile as a city of artistic innovation.
Primary Projects & Learning Opportunities
1. Commit consistently to a 6-month fellowship for 10-15 hours per week; meet regularly with supervisor
2. Organize applicants for the Sherwood Award and track their work being presented in Los Angeles as well as assist with data management of the applications
3. Conduct research on candidates and provide updates to members of the Sherwood project team
4. Assist in the information sessions for potential applicants
5. Coordinate and assist the Sherwood Award search process including organizing the external and internal panel, marketing and outreach for applicants, and analyzing applications
6. Answer communication and liaise with Center Theatre Group's Communications department regarding the award
7. Observe and participate in a variety of Artistic Development Program activities
