Director of Production
POSITION SUMMARY: Oversee and lead all production staff and production operations of Center Theatre Group, its three theatres (the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre) and its Costume Shop and Prop Shop/Warehouse.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Oversee the production process and provide leadership to production staff for all Center Theatre Group productions
•Manage and allocate production staff time across all projects
•Set production deadlines and goals in concert with the production managers and technical directors, and provide the necessary oversight to ensure those goals are met
•Provide production expertise to upper management as necessary prior to committing to projects. Scouting of potential projects as deemed by upper management
•Provide production management for self-produced and Broadway bound shows at the Ahmanson Theatre, and negotiate and prepare designer contracts for such productions
•Lead the technical advance of touring productions presented by CTG at the Ahmanson Theatre. Supervise load-ins, technical rehearsals, and load-outs and represent CTG's interests in the planning of crew calls, schedules, etc.
•Supervise all IATSE crew at the Ahmanson Theatre in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements for each Local
•Approve and edit Ahmanson Theatre IATSE payroll prior to processing on a weekly basis
•Work in conjunction with Producing Director, General Managers, Production Managers and Technical Directors to plan and budget the seasons in all three CTG theatres
•Prepare budgets for non-show expenses such as office supplies, training, facility enhancement, conferences, software, etc.
•Ensure that CTG takes the safety of its employees seriously through setting and enforcing appropriate policies. Facilitate staff training as appropriate
•In conjunction with the Producing Director, serve as a key member of the CTG negotiation team for contract negotiations of various IATSE collective bargaining agreements
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Participate in the technical rehearsals of all theaters as necessary to ensure a smooth rehearsal process
•Assist CTG Producers in setting physical expectations with creative teams
•Research and promote training and professional development for all production staff
•Oversee hiring and manage employment of all production staff
•Ensure that the CTG staff development reviews policy is enforced, including reviews of the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatre IATSE Department Heads. Attend performance review meetings as necessary
•In partnership with the Music Center Operating Company, oversee facility fee spending
•Attend conferences as appropriate to both represent CTG and explore opportunities for the company and staff
•Oversee vendor relationships and accounts. Ensure that accounts are kept current and new accounts are created when necessary
•Ensure that company petty cash and credit card procedures and policies are functioning and appropriately managed
•Provide approval of expenses (sign-off of receipts) that are not show related. In the absence of one of the production managers, provide approval of show-related expenses
•Create, shepherd and nurture a company-wide calendar solution
•Other duties as required
Qualifications Knowledge and essential skills:
•Strong technical skills and experience, including a basic understanding of theatrical lighting, special effects, rigging, set construction, automation, costuming, audio production, video production, and prop acquisition
•Clear and persuasive communicator, both written and verbal. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with designers and directors
•Solid experience managing IATSE crews
•Experience overseeing, administering and negotiating union collective bargaining agreements strongly preferred. Experience with IA Locals 33, 706 and 768 highly desirable
•Basic understanding of both LORT and Production Equity contracts
•Basic understanding of LORT and Ahmanson Designer contracts
•Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
Minimum requirements: Essential functions and abilities
•Ability to multi-task and work effectively while managing multiple deadlines and priorities
•Ability to remain calm, balanced and productive, demonstrating strong leadership and managerial skills, while exhibiting tact, discretion, diplomacy and a sense of humor
•Demonstrable understanding of the production process from both a creative and technical viewpoint so as to negotiate a clear path to success for any given production
Education, Experience and Licensing
•Previous experience as Technical Director or Production Manager of a complex organization
•Bachelor's degree required. Masters degree strongly preferred
