CBS 62 (WWJ-TV) and CW50 (WKBD-TV), the CBS News and Stations owned & operated in the #15 television market Detroit, is searching for a dynamic, inclusive, hardworking leader who has a history of exhibiting excellent news judgement. The next Director News will lead the news products WWJ-TV CBS 62, WKBD-TV CW50 Detroit, CBSN Detroit, CBSDetroit.com (collectively, CBS Detroit).
As part of leading CBS News Detroit, the Director News will be instrumental in developing strategies to drive audience growth. The right candidate will work with the Vice President and General Manager to establish quality journalism covering the various communities throughout Michigan. The right person will own the charge to evolving the newsroom to a multi-platform, multi-skilled operation that produces content 24/7.
Qualified applicants will have a record of covering breaking news and weather. They will also have experience producing investigative, consumer advocacy and enterprise reporting. Someone with a history of recruiting, developing, and retaining journalists is also a must! Being a problem solver and creative doer are important. We also are looking for candidates with a history of handling resources in a major newsroom and making thoughtful investments geared toward audience growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Creates 24/7 strategy and direction for news coverage across platforms.
• Ability to leverage and apply research leading to audience growth.
• Cultivate growth of journalists through feedback, performance management and training.
• Works with fellow department heads to improve promotion and monetization of content across platforms.
• Ability to delegate and appoint newsroom staff into appropriate roles maximizing strengths.
• Understanding of how to work well with people from all backgrounds.
• Familiar with managing newsroom budgets and anticipating major financial challenges and changes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BA from a four-year college or university is preferred
• 5 years' minimum experience in newsroom leadership role, preferably larger market
