Business Area: BuzzFeed News
Job Category: Breaking News
Salary band: 87,500-105,000 USD
Union Status: Non Union
The Role
BuzzFeed News is seeking an ambitious, think-outside-the-box editor to lead our expanding coverage of the entertainment industry. We're looking for someone who thrives on taking big swings and has the editing and managing chops to get those projects over the finish line.
The ideal candidate will be just as comfortable managing more deeply reported projects as they are assigning and editing quicker turnaround stories that capture what our audience is talking about each day.
This editor will also contribute their editing skills to general assignment breaking news as needed, so they should also be comfortable with hard news.
This role is for Monday - Friday, preferably based in Los Angeles, leading a team of two dedicated beat reporters.
You Will
• Have at least five years of experience as a leader in an entertainment-oriented newsroom environment
• Have the industry sourcing and knowledge to point your reporters in the right direction, and guide them through complex assignments
• Push your reporters to not only find and pitch interesting angles to stories our readers are talking about on any given day, but find ways to actually start a conversation and then continue to drive - we want to find lanes of coverage that we own and force other news orgs to follow
• Care just as much about the daily news cycle as you do about pursuing longer term enterprise stories
• Be comfortable working with other desks and editors on collaborations
• Be a results-driven editor who leads with empathy and enthusiasm
Part of what makes BuzzFeed a pioneer in digital media is our commitment to exploring new ventures that lead to spreading truth and joy. As such, you may be asked to share your knowledge with your colleagues through presentations or trainings, to screen and interview job candidates, or to take part in recruitment or networking events on behalf of the company.
You Have
• A broad and enthusiastic interest in all things entertainment - film, TV, music, podcasting, etc
• Fluency in internet culture, what people are talking about, and how to avoid misinformation
• A track record of managing a team or projects to success
• A passion for storytelling in innovative ways that break through on the internet
• An infectious, competitive spirit that contributes to the overall coverage of the newsroom
To Apply:
Please apply with a résumé, your social media handles, and a cover letter that tells us more about you, your work, and why you'd be good for the job.
