BuzzFeed currently has an opening for a managing Litigation and Compliance Attorney in our NY office. We are looking for a business-minded, practical, and self-motivated attorney with at least twelve years of media and intellectual property law experience and particular expertise in First Amendment/editorial review and litigation, as well as advising on news gathering. General litigation experience is also required, including copyright, trademark and commercial disputes. Experience in employment and labor matters is a plus. The Associate General Counsel will report to the General Counsel.
You Will:
• Manage the legal team that supports BuzzFeed's News, Content and Studio organizations in pre-publication review, FOIA appeals and related litigation, and DMCA/CDA/UGC moderation counseling and provide strategic guidance to clients on high risk/high value projects.
• Develop company-wide strategy for managing all compliance risks; working together with internal clients to employ training, contractual indemnification and insurance to minimize the company's exposure while continuing to encourage the company's growth mindset.
• Manage the team that is responsible globally for the company's compliance with applicable laws; remain fully abreast of developments in compliance requirements including in employment, privacy and advertising.
• Oversee all proceedings, challenges, disputes and litigation, whether directly managed by internal or external counsel.
• Develop a global media law strategy with a focus on assessing and managing risk across the enterprise in accordance with Buzzfeed's business needs, priorities and resources.
You have:
• Must be a NY admitted attorney with at least a combined 12 years relevant experience at a law firm or in-house at a media company, including pre-publication review. The ideal candidate has both firm and In-house experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of First Amendment/defamation law, Intellectual Property rights, and general litigation management as well as a mastered capability for legal research, analysis and reasoning.
• Experience overseeing a compliance organization or being the primary person responsible for compliance in one or more of the following areas -- employment and labor, privacy, advertising/marketing/promotions.
• Strong negotiation skills and experience, as well as strong analytical and organizational skills
• Experience managing administrative staff and/or other attorneys.
• An ideal candidate will also have a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving and thrive in fast-paced environment, tempered by an appreciation of legal complexity and risk.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills, sound business judgment, ability to adapt quickly to change and to work well on a team
• Proactive and detail-oriented thinker with the ability to thrive in an often ambiguous, fast-paced environment
• Ability to keep information confidential
• Effectively prioritize, execute and respond to a wide variety of inquiries, both verbally and in written form, with an emphasis on identifying and resolving issues
