Billboard: Senior Editor, Features
Billboard is seeking an experienced Senior Editor to edit longform features across platforms, focused on the print magazine as well as the thriving website serving 25 million music fans and high-powered industry insiders alike, and contributing to other editorial as needed. The Senior Editor would work closely with top editors as well as writers across departments to assign, develop and edit a wide range of feature stories and packages.
The ideal candidate values editing as a craft and enjoys the challenge of, and attention to detail required to help writers create the most compelling narrative possible in a feature story — and can provide the clear, constructive criticism that helps them do so. They value deep, objective reporting as well as style and voice. The candidate is open-minded, curious, proactive, and eager to collaborate with others. You have a fan’s enthusiasm for artists and a strong interest in discovering new music, but you also want to know what makes the music business tick behind the scenes, whether it's the next big catalog sale, the up-and-coming publisher to watch, or the scrappy start-up changing how artists are paid.
Responsibilities:
• Work one-on-one with the magazine’s executive features editor to ideate and plan longform features (including both print and digital covers) and editorial packages (including those in Billboard’s annual franchise issues).
• Work closely with both staff and freelance writers online edits of stories, from draft through proofs on tight weekly deadlines
• Edit at least one long feature per issue
• Collaborate closely with the managing editor, photo and design teams to ensure stories are developed in a holistic and timely manner
• Handle other editorial responsibilities according to features needs
Requirements:
• Minimum 5-10 years journalism experience, including at least 3 years’ experience doing rigorous editing of features (both profiles and reported stories for a print or web publication).
• The ability to work with a wide range of writer abilities — from veteran reporters to young writers taking on their first-ever long feature — and personalities
• Enthusiasm for editing and for fine-tuning the quality of Billboardfeatures across platforms
• Familiarity with and strong interest in the music business
• A sense of what distinguishes a Billboardfeature, and an overall familiarity with the magazine
• Willingness to roll with the punches of the news cycle and the ever-changing demands of artists and the music business
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger, diverse team
