Billboard, the leading entertainment brand covering music globally, is launching Billboard En Español, an all-Spanish site that will serve as a companion to Billboard.com, the ultimate global destination for music, with a renowned authority among artists, fans and the industry.
Billboard En Español is looking for an outstanding translator who is fully bilingual and who can translate copy primarily from English to Spanish (and occasionally from Spanish to English) quickly, precisely and with nuance. The successful candidate will love music and entertainment, will understand music lingo and will be familiar with the subtle differences between Spanish idioms in different countries. He or she will also be a strong writer who, in a pinch, can write news stories in Spanish. Our translator will be part of a tightly-knit team where no job is too big or too small and where the focus is on growth. You will report to the Deputy Editor of Billboard En Español.
Responsibilities:
• Translate, as needed, stories from English to Spanish on a daily basis. Daily volume will likely average between 3,000 and 6,000 words daily.
• Translate, as needed, stories from Spanish to English. Story count can fluctuate from no stories for several weeks, to a handful on a single day, as needed.
• Ensure proper grammar and punctuation are a standard. Stories should reflect final editing as much as possible.
• Translate other content, including video captions, TikTok stories and marketing material as needed.
• Ability to write stories, in Spanish, when required. Think of Billboard En Español as a start up where everyone is expected to pitch in, and where there are infinite opportunities to expand and grow.
• Be available to work after business hours as the news cycle or special events, including award shows and conferences, demands.
• Peruse Billboard.com’s output of content on a daily basis, and suggest stories for Billboard En Español.
• Communicate constantly with different teams across Billboard’s platforms.
• Create and maintain a glossary of commonly used terms, titles and slang.
Requirements:
• A fully bilingual (native Spanish speaker preferred) translator and writer who lives comfortably in between the two worlds: mainstream and Latino-centric; Spanish and English. Impeccable spoken and written Spanish is a must.
• Your expertise is translating from English to Spanish quickly, with nuance and grammatical precision. But you can also precisely translate from Spanish to English.
• Minimum two years experience as an English-Spanish/Spanish-English translator in a fast-paced environment that requires high-volume work.
• Minimum two years experience as a writer, in Spanish, for an established media company, communications firm or similar.
• Understanding and knowledge of Latin music, its artists and genres is essential.
• Native fluency: able to speak, read, and write with superior proficiency in Spanish and able to navigate differences among the many local varieties of Spanish.
• Excellent command of the English language. Must be able to communicate on a constant basis with Billboard’s editorial, social and video teams across the board.
• Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
• Perform as a self-starter who takes initiative and is not afraid of giving suggestions and stepping up to the plate as needed. No task is too big or too small.
• Flexibility with work hours that will likely involve time outside the 9-to-5 weekday hours. Off-shift work required occasionally in urgent news situations
