Summary:
WBBM Newsradio is looking for an energetic and accomplished news manager to help lead our incredible team of journalists. The Managing Editor sets the agenda for news coverage on Chicago’s highly respected, top rated station, plus works collaboratively with our digital team in our multi-media newsroom. We’re looking for someone with an extensive background, loves the high paced challenge of breaking news, is a strong planner, and can help guide and mentor talent with various levels of experience. Along with the Brand Manager/News Director, WBBM’s Managing Editor makes editorial decisions, guides and supervises reporters, editors and producers to ensure accuracy and strong journalistic ethics.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
• Leading the newsroom with creative vision and a positive, collaborative spirit
• Developing story ideas both short term and long term
• Mentoring and coaching reporters with regular feedback sessions and daily editorial guidance
• Shaping daily news coverage by prioritizing quality story ideas and fostering creative pitches from reporters
• Keeping a future file of upcoming news events
• Assigning reporters to stories and meeting daily with each editor
• Listening to the air product with attention to reporting, writing and story selection
• Collaborating, coordinating and providing resources for digital team
• Planning for major news events, including advance preparation for live interviews
• Developing relationships with spokespeople for police, fire, schools and government officials among others.
• Preparing feature story assignment schedules and planning in-depth series
• Being on-call along with News Director for breaking news, questions from newsroom and help manage on-going coverage.
Qualifications
Administrative duties include:
• Scheduling newsroom personnel
• Backing up Brand Manager for payroll and personnel matters
• Equipment inventory and distribution
• Hiring, training and mentoring new employees
• Supervising newsroom personnel
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree
• 5 years of journalism and audio experience
• Outstanding news judgment and story development skills
• Experience managing, coaching and mentoring
• Proficiency with digital audio editing software
• Social Media abilities
• Familiarity with Chicago market
• Strong interpersonal skills
• New ideas and a love for the job!
