Digital Managing Editor 1010 Win & Wcbs 880
1010 WINS and WCBS 880 have launched an exciting transformation of its digital news operation. We are seeking talented journalists with strong news judgment and news-gathering skills, as well as a passion for local news and audio storytelling. This team is growing audiences across all platforms, from mobile to social media to smart speakers. This is an opportunity to join an award-winning news operation that has built a large loyal listening audience over many years and now seeks to extend its reach by creating and distributing an array of new digital content.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
• Assist the Executive Editor, to whom you'll report, in leading the digital content team and directing and supervising their work
• Oversee daily news coverage; this includes creating and updating throughout the day an assignment list for content producers, responding to breaking news by assigning coverage ASAP and actively monitoring sources of breaking news (Dataminr, social media, AP, communications from news desks, broadcast etc.
• Work with content producers to develop, shape and edit stories from concept to completion.
• Top-edit content producers' articles, ensuring stories have appropriate elements (photo, audio, video, social embeds), they adhere to AP style, are SEO-friendly and that the quality is consistent across the board
• Publish your own articles, audio stories, podcasts and short videos on all digital platforms
• Post to social media accounts, compose push notifications and newsletters
• Manage the hompages so the most pertinent and recent news is featured in the main spot
• Collaborate with broadcast staff to advance and tailor stories and other content for digital
• Pitch and identify to leadership news WINS and 880 should be covering and pitch new angles
• Oversee staff schedule, workflow and employee onboarding
• Develop story ideas, series, and special projects that complement broadcast news coverage
• Ensure a range of voices and perspectives are represented in editorial coverage
• Use real-time metrics in Google Analytics, DOMO and other analytical tools to drive editorial decisions
• Work with marketing and sales to execute various digital initiatives
• Develop and maintain editorial calendar and schedule
Qualifications
More About You:
Required
• 5-7 years of journalism experience in a major newsroom (NYC preferred); at least 2 years in a managerial capacity
• Outstanding news judgment and ability to work under deadline pressure
• Thorough knowledge of the political and cultural landscapes of New York City and its surrounding areas
• Strong editing, writing, reporting and story development skills
• Experience managing, coaching and mentoring junior journalists
• Proficient in AP style and SEO best practices
• Command of best practices on all social media platforms
• A knack for transforming a piece of audio into a compelling digital article
• Ability to refine and optimize podcasts and audio content for digital distribution
• Significant experience with content management/online publishing systems
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Weekend, evening and holiday flexibility
Candidates will need to submit writing samples and may be asked to take an edit test
Preferred:
• Passion for local news, podcasts, and digital media
• Knack for selecting eye-popping visuals and mutl-media to complement and illustrate stories
• Ability to evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas
• Willingness to experiment and innovate
• Strong organizational skills and solid work ethic
• Excellent interpersonal skills
