Job Summary: The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena are seeking a forward-thinking and detail-oriented Senior Staff Accountant to join our Finance and Accounting department . This role is a vital member of the team responsible for delivering accurate , timely , and dependable financial data in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment. This role encompasses a variety of accounting and administrative responsibilities, particularly in revenue recognition, event-related revenue and expenses, and financial statement reporting support that informs data-driven decision- making across the organization. The ideal candidate embraces collaboration, with strong analytical skills and a passion to be the best at what they do .
Key Responsibilities:
Monthly Journal Entries
• Participates in month-end close activities, including the preparation of complex journal entries, cash settlements, and reconciliations associated with arena revenue and expenses.
• Monitors and records monthly debt interest accruals to ensure timely and accurate recognition of interest expense in line with GAAP and internal policies.
• Performs monthly profit and loss variance analysis, recommending appropriate accruals and adjustments as needed.
Interdepartmental collaboration
• Partners with sales teams to assess the accounting impact of complex, multi-element contracts.
• Analyzes revenue and balance sheets to verify results and investigate discrepancies with internal teams.
• Ensures adherence to US GAAP and internal control policies and procedures, and suggests updates when necessary.
• Process a low volume of accounts payable invoices .
Audit Support
• Supports the preparation of both internal and external financial statements, including related debt compliance ratios.
• Assists with annual and league audits by preparing schedules and responding to audit inquiries.
• Provides support in gathering and organizing information required for the preparation of tax returns.
Problem Solving
• Serve as first point of contact for accounting system issues across NetSuite, and other applications that impact day to day work .
• Investigate and resolve integration issues including data sync failures, API errors, and transactional discrepancies.
• Participates in driving, creating, and implementing new processes, and works to identify and implement improvements in accounting procedures.
R equirements :
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 3-6 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including complex revenue recognition, full general ledger responsibility in sports, entertainment, or related industry .
• Solid understanding of US GAAP and revenue recognition standards.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Excel skills.
• Ability to manage deadlines and adapt in a fast-changing, high-volume environment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to responsibilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to interpret financial data and trends to support data-driven decision-making
Preferred Qualifications
• CPA or CPA eligible candidate is strongly preferred .
• Experience with NetSuite and Archtics is a plus.
