Position Information:
• Start Date: June 15 – December 4, 2026
• Hours: 40 hours per week (10:00 – 6:00pm)
• Location: St. Paul, MN (Hybrid)

Intern, Reporting - MPR News:
As an MPR News, Reporter intern, you’ll play a key role in our newsroom—helping us deliver trusted journalism to audiences on radio and online, while bringing fresh, overlooked stories that deepen local coverage and expand our reach.
Key Learning Goals:
• Learn how to rapidly respond to news and develop brief radio and digital stories on a tight timeline
• Work directly with editors on at least one longer-term project
• Work alongside editors to sharpen your news judgment, story framing, reporting and understanding of journalism ethics
• Work alongside reporters to develop good field reporting and interview techniques
• Learn all aspects of broadcast reporting and production
• Gain a greater understanding of how daily news operations are run
Responsibilities:
• Research, report and write news stories as assigned
• Record and edit audio
• Take photos and capture video
• Work a regular weekend day shift, either Saturday or Sunday, and some evenings as assigned
Programming:
• Participate in robust on-boarding experience
• Professional development: on-the-job training, intercultural development assessment, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.
• Participate in brown bag sessions to gain broader perspective of the organization
Required Qualifications
• Enrolled undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduates (within the past 18 months)
• Must be able to work 40 hours per week (Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. preferred) for the duration of this internship
• Willingness to conduct in-person interviews and talk to members of the public for stories
• Previous experience or coursework in news writing
• Awareness of current events
• Knowledge of basic journalistic principles
Preferred Qualifications
• Self-motivated, resourceful, curious, creative and detail oriented
• Radio or podcast production
• Experience writing for a daily or weekly media organization, including a school broadcast outlet or newspaper
