Producer, LAist (Digital on-call)

Position Summary:
LAist is looking for an on-call writer with a strong voice and solid news judgement to cover life in Los Angeles and beyond for LAist, a community news site serving the greater Los Angeles region. The ideal candidate is fast and creative and someone who can find sharp angles on a wide range of topics – from news to arts and culture to food — on various digital platforms. You’re as comfortable aggregating from various news and events outlets as you are sourcing original ideas and drafting your work. And you have the stamina to keep up with tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment. Bonus points if you’ve created and grown a newsletter audience.
But, most importantly, you have a deep love and understanding for L.A. and Southern California. We are looking for someone who is passionate about becoming a trusted friend for our readers — telling people what’s happening in their neighborhood and why it matters. If that’s you, keep reading…

Compensation:
The pay rate for this opportunity will be no less than $40.08 per hour. Exact pay rate determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, budget and internal equity. The grade of this position is HF.
Position Responsibility:
• Generates and develops story ideas that will grow a loyal digital audience and create community in Southern California under guidance of the senior digital editor
• Curate and produce content across with the highest standards of accuracy, production quality and timeliness
• Write and produce a regular newsletter
• Work with the Audience Engagement Director to produce engaging event columns
• Collaborate with other news producers, reporters, editors on coverage as needed
• Be a champion for a consistent voice and style for LAist
• Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent work experience
• Five or more years of experience working in a digital/engagement reporting capacity at another news organization
• Community journalism experience
Required Skills
, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Strong news judgment and interest in local and regional news
• Outstanding writing skills, particularly for digital platforms. We expect to see writing samples.
• Ability to tell stories in different ways on different platforms
• Deep understanding of regional community events and experiences
• Broad knowledge of digital storytelling tools and trends
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple departments/divisions
• Knowledge and fluency with AP style and usage
• Basic knowledge of SEO, particularly for headlines
• Ability to use analytics to drive decision-making
• Experience working with content management systems
• Basic familiarity with Photoshop or another photo editing software
• Ability to work with changing deadlines and in a fast-paced environment
• Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS
• Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.
