Position Information:
• Start Date: January 6 – March 28, 2025
• Hours: 40 hours per week (9:00 – 5:00 pm)
• Location: St. Paul, MN (Hybrid)
• Compensation: $20.00/hour
• Application Deadline: The position will be open until filled, with the goal to hire at least one month before the start date.
Intern, Radio Reporter:
As a reporting intern at MPR News, you will help the newsroom deliver journalism to a younger audience across multiple formats, including audio and digital content. This role is part of the strategy to grow new audiences.
Key Learning Goals:
• Learn to respond quickly to news and develop short radio stories on tight deadlines.
• Work with editors on long-term projects and collaborate with the digital production team.
• Enhance journalism skills alongside reporters and editors.
• Write concise radio and print copy.
• Learn all aspects of broadcast reporting and production.
Responsibilities:
• Research, report, and write news stories as assigned.
• Conduct interviews using provided radio recording equipment or remotely via phone or Zoom.
• Edit audio, record narration, and mix stories ranging from 1 to 4 minutes.
• Pitch stories that fit or stretch MPR News formats.
• Write stories for MPRNews.org.
• Commit to learning and applying best journalism practices.
• Work a regular weekend day shift (Saturday or Sunday) and occasional evenings.

Required Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year undergraduate program, a graduate program, or a recent graduate (within 12 months).
• Willingness to work a weekend day shift and some evenings.
• Coursework emphasizing writing and communications.
• Previous experience or coursework in news writing.
• Awareness of current events and knowledge of basic journalistic principles.
• Experience with audio editing platforms like Audacity or Audition.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Reliable news judgment.
• Ability to follow directions and meet tight deadlines.
• Self-motivated, resourceful, creative, and detail-oriented.
• Experience in radio or podcast production.
• Experience writing for a media organization, such as a school broadcast outlet or newspaper.
